I am in competitive swimming and I swim relatively fast for my age but I have a serious problem with diving at the start. Aparrently I always catch up later on but I still have a major problem, I kind of stick my head into the water which is wrong. Can you give me some advice? Thanks.

  1. push up off the block and stay in streamline as long as posible then yea but went they beep the horn dont dive deep and like kind of jump and push off the block

  2. the point of diving is to get in the water ,fast with the least amount of restrictions, aka not belly flopping... u just gotta put ur hands above ur head as if your a pencil, and go in point first try to jump and position yourself so yourhands go in as your body will.. remember if you fail, try again worst to worst its just water!

  3. first, you get your feet set firmly in the position that you like them (1 foot forward, 1 back is very popular). if you're doing 1 forward, one back (like in source #1), then you should have a slight backwards lean. not so that you're in the timers' laps, but to create a little tension. when the starter starts you guys, then pull with your arms and push with your legs. make sure you get your hands up in a streamline before you enter the water. try and gage it so that you don't end up too deep or too shallow, so maybe steer (very slightly) with your hands. your streamline should stay on the back of your ears tightly. once you have the normal dive down, you can try to look ahead right after the start when you're soaring through the air and THEN put your head in the streamline. look at the pictures in my sources, because the second one is of either the olympics or a very high caliber meet (with michael phelps) and their starts.

  4. Do what other people are saying and remember to keep your head down. Look down at the water before you dive, don't look up at anything else. Don't put your chin on your chest though, because then you could end up doing a flip.

  5. Try to go high before you go into the water. It's all about the length of time before you go into the water so up and out is the best. The point of the start is to get a lead. Good swimmers are in the air longer than regular swimmers. Also, don't belly flop. You want to go in at a slight angle (not too deep). If you have trouble, ask your coach if you can work on it.
