  1. I suggest you learn how to turn on a part of a hill that no one is using and there's no trees, rocks, or jumps so you don't get hurt or injure anyone in the process. Everyone has their own unique way of riding but the way I do it is to first get comfortable with the terrain (obviously) and when you want to turn the way your back is facing, lean back slightly, going to your heals on the board. Bend you knees and focus on your balance. Start using your front foot to steer the board sideways but not too much or you can fall if you're not going fast enough. When you want to turn to the direction your toes are pointing to, lean forward to be standing on you toes and do the same.

  2. Start on really easy terrain.  Preferably something with a run-out (a flat area where you will stop).  Practice sliding down the hill in a balance position with just your front foot attached and back one on the stomp pad.

When you are good at straight runs, then you can start to work on J-turns.  Start the same way, but then focus on turning your front foot.  Start on the toe-side.   Be patient as a little speed and momentum will make the board turn.  Try to keep the board pretty flat, but then once you are turned, you will be up on edge.  Then try the same thing for the heel-side.

For both turns, make sure your body all turns the same way.  Keep everything moving smoothly so you can keep your balance.

Once you've gotten good at J-turns with one foot, you can add your back foot.  However, still focus a lot on your front foot and your back foot will follow.  (Just like having two hands on a steering wheel)

Then you can start to go on slightly steeper terrain, but make sure it's not too steep to make you scared to go down the hill.  Make sure you keep your weight forward.  Alot of times people get scared going down the hill and start to lean back, then it's real hard to turn and to balance.

Of course, it's much easier to show this than explain it so I'd recommend taking a lesson.  Be sure to tell them that you are not a beginner never ever, but if you've never had lessons before, it might be a good idea to just start in the beginner group depending on your confidance.

    Hope this helps some.
