  1. W H Y ?????????????///

boat engines run in the oppisite direction of car engines.

  2. First off join the USCGUAX Power Boating Squadron. Attend the USCGUAX Safe Boating Class, talk to the Flotilla Members and learn how to be safe and considerate while enjoying your new boat.

Other boaters can tell you more about that stuff than any one else could.

    Be Safe,Have Fun, Cruise on.

  3. Cut your losses and sell it.

  4. Bayliners use a car engine, not a marine engine, early 80s 2.5 liter bayliner motor is a Pontiac Iron duke engine, can be found in 1977-1980 sunbird, 84-88 fiero, 82-85 camero, 85-90 astro, Buick skylark, buick century, s-10 pickups, jimmys list goes on and on.... why the engine was so cheap it was MASS produced.  The engine uses Chevys small bolt pattern so can swap in other motors as well.

Unless you know about boat engines and accessories would advise you to skip this boat as a first boat, time and hassle for you wont pay back its dividends.

Bayliner is an economy boat, ($8995 sale price for a 15 Capri from a local dealer) so don't expect the same construction as a Cobalt ($89,525 at the same dealer).

Does your boat still have an outdrive? gimbal? any floor rot? hows the interior?  check below the back two seats besides the motor, is it soft below them? control cables still work?

rebuilt a couple of these boats, but found it more profitable to gut them and sell the pieces on eBay,  (windshield alone sold for more than i bought the whole boat for)

  5. if it s v8 a volvo  block is a chevy 350.i  worked on volvo as well as bayliner if its not an outboard im sorry to i think you made a mistake, their 4 cyl cooling systems are a bit complicated

  6. Look for an AQ 151 4 cylinder volvo or check to see what outdrive you have and look for the most common engine that will work. Look on Ebay at the same boat model see what engine they come with standard. Than find one over next few months

  7. If you use a car engine it will have to be marinised and make up new engine mounts,Presume it has a stern leg so I would purchase a good Volvo that way she will bolt straight in,Hopefully you have the originall instrumentation still on board. From experience stick to original and no hassles.Happy boating from down under

  8. bayliner's are known for being the most unreliable boat on the market. you get more bells and whistles for the money but something always goes wrong. Forget the engine, forget the hull. Throw the thing far away or sink it(won't be hard). Get a decent hull and put the right motor in it. Being out on the water with family and friends is no place to save money. You bet your life, literally.

  9. You got taken.  Why would you buy a boat without an engine?  Marine engines cost a lot of money.  Say $10, 000 dollars to start new.  No you can't put a car engine in the boat.  You will blow yourself up when the sparks from the starter or alternator ignite the gas fumes in the boat.  Marine engines have spark retarders on all electrical parts to prevent this.  You need a saltwater cooling system on the engine to cool the boat engine.  A car engine cannot handle the saltwater.  Try to find a used marine engine on Craigslist.com and have someone who knows about boats for real help you do the work.  The people you are talking to don't know anything about boats.  Don't listen to them.  Don't use a car engine in the boat.  Good Luck,  Try to sell the hull and buy a boat with an engine.

  10. First, a car engine WILL work, but not with the original cam, starter, alternator, freeze plugs, and hardware. The amount of money you will spend to do what you are talking about, even if you somehow found the only good bayliner on earth, still wouldn't be worth it. I wouldn't spend a dime on that boat. That's what we in the business call an entry level boat which is a nice way of saying "CHEAP PIECE OF c**p"! It's over 20 years old and sure to be rotten in all the wrong places. To re-do a boat will cost you more than you planned by at least 100% It's a great time to buy a boat so I would check out your local dealers and see what specials they have on 2-5 year old boats. Try to trade in your reef for anything you can get. That way you can at least be boating and know what you are spending UP-FRONT instead of halfway thru a project you can't afford to finish! Especially if your not educated about boats. Good luck

P.S.- Did you hear next year's bayliners will have glass bottoms?

It's so you can see last year's model!

  11. put an outboard

  12. This is my favorite website for parts and discussion on boating.

I bought a used one and as a first time owner I had a lot of questions (and a couple problems)

I joined the forum and was soon getting good suggestions to my problems, and was able to get any parts I wanted from the store. Hope you enjoy your boat as much as I have enjoyed mine!

  13. Yes you can fit a care engine but you will need to marinize it ie design a cooling system that is correct for that size of engine there are kits available for various engines something that needs to be researched by you! This involves heat calculations to do it correctly if a conversion kit is not available for the engine you want to install.

It is far easier in the long run to fit the correct engine for that boat, otherwise you will have to change the cooling system, electrical wiring, engine mountings, alignment, shaft couplings, fuel connection s etc unless your an engineer it will give a headache.

  14. BAD DECISION,,,BAYLINERS HAVE BAD RESLE VALUE----SHOULD HAVE BAGHT A GREMLIN  (CAR)

  15. I put a Chevy 250 straight 6 in my boat.  Put on a new carb with a spark arrest on it.  The project started just like yours. Buy the time my project got on to the water I could of bought a nice new boat!  Ran the boat for a few day and it was great until the old gear box blew out.  It's siting in my yard now until I find a junk yard to take it.
