I live in New York and we mostly rely on bus and train.

I plan moving to Virginia In October. Outside of New York A car is A most. The problem is, I don't know that much about cars and I don't have my liecense yet.

I can drive A littlebit but need more practice.

I want to buy A car that I can rely on, but don't know what I should get. I'm looking for A used car in the 3,000 to 8,000 range. I'm not looking at any cars older than 2004.

Any suggestions? Any information that is helpful. I will give alot of points to someone who gives me the best possible answer

  2. I think you are going to spend a lil more cash if you want a 04 and up. Honda, Toyota and Nissan in my opinion are the best out there. Plus if you get a 4 cylinder they are good on gas. I personally like Honda accords more then any other.

  3. yahoo home page click autos, used

    $8,000 might get you a 2004 model.

Also look for "Program cars" they are off lease, usually less than 2 years old, less than 20,000 miles and about 2/3 the cost of NEW.

    Select and search for

    Chevrolet Malibu, Monte Carlo

    Pontiac G5, G6

    Honda Civic, Accord

    Toyota Corolla, Camry

Be leery of KIA, Suzuki, Hyundai.

We see too many with items broken that shouldn't be broken.

  4. Okay I can tell you are serious about not knowing about cars...first off you would be lucky to get a car even from 2000 for less than 10,000 dollars...and 04 or newer will be about 16,000 (depending on the beginning price of the car) for instance an 05 STI still costs in the mid 20,000 range (was originally in high 30,000 range back in 05)...my 2000 Subaru cost a little over 9,000 with 40k miles...you might be able to find one for 6 to 8 grand if it has well over 100k miles (again depending on the car make) but that means you would have a lot of maintenance to do...timing belt would have to be replaced on any car over 100k (if the previous owners didnt do it already) timing belt costs about 1000 dollars and if you dont replace it then it will break and destroy the engine. Personally I think buying a used car over 100k is not worth the risk and you won't find cars from 04 or newer for 8k or less unless they are in bad shape and have a lot of miles...for instance my friends Dodge Dakota from 1998 with 75k miles cost just under 7k (no rust though and only a few scratches in the bed of the truck)...if you want a good quality car from 04 or newer it will cost well over 10k...Personally I recommend Subaru or BMW...BMW has had over 43 Engine awards in the past 8 years (the 05 BMW M3 won best world car of the year) Subaru has won best engine of the year twice (including this year...2008)...both Subaru and BMW are on the top ten list for cars that retain their value the longest.

  5. if I were you I would go with a nice honda civic, 02 through 05, this will fit in with your price range and the nice 4 cylinder engine can get you around 35-40 mpg. these cars are japanese and japanese cars are known to last the longest. up to around 350 thousand miles if taken care of. the campact size will make this very easy to drive and park. and because it is a honda any time you need parts or work done it will be very cheap. a good place to shop for these is on craigslist.com watch out for scams though.

  6. Your first car should be in 300-800 range, you will destroy it anyway, but also you will learn what NOT to do when you're driving.Look it like investment in your learning process.
