Ok, I thought I had found my perfect dog - The Finnish Lapphund. They are the perfect size, they are good around kids, other dogs etc, relativly easy to train, they are active but at the same time they can adapt to being lazy when the occasion calls. A tick in every box. Plus they are very cute to look at.

But I live in a relativly warm area and I'm worried they will be get too hot.

I currently have a golden retriever but I want another one. Nothing against the breed, I love her dearly, but I just want something different.

I like boxers and cocker spaniels.

Uhm yeah!

Any ideas would be great!!

  1. I have  a Rotweiler and a Cocker Spaniel.

The Cocker Spaniel are cute and playful. That needs a lot of attention

  2. Have you considered a greyhound from a rescue group? A gentle loyal clean dog that sheds little hair, practically no dog odour, great with kids and other dogs and there are 1000s out there in need of good homes.. They can suffer a bit in the heat if it's really hot but if they have somewhere cool to be they'll be fine.  Do a little research to see if one would suit you.

  3. Consider a Redbone Coonhound as it fits a lot of the qualities you are mentioning.  They are about the same size height wise as a golden but not necessarily as "bulky", being about 60-65 lbs.  They are primarily available in southern states of the US, so warm weather is fine for them (very short hair so not much in the way of shedding)... Great with kids, easy to train (they are a "pleaser" type personality), loves exercise but is happy to lazy around as well.  The down side is that they bawl instead of bark which can be rather noisy.

Another benefit is that since they are not all that popular outside the raccoon hunting community, they have been bred for their heartiness and there are no breed inherent health issues.

  4. While I have no idea if the Lapphund is the right dog for you, here is something to think about.  People who live in Florida, Hawaii and other warm places keep Samoyeds, Huskies, Malamutes, and St. Bernards (among many other breeds).  Some of those are show dogs which must be kept in full coat.  The double-coated breeds (the shedders!) are insulated from the heat by their hair.  It is more unkind to shave them down for summer than to leave them be.  A Lapphund would adapt to your climate.  You could possibly even find one born in your state.

  5. I have a boxer & he is the best dog ever. You have to train them though, or they aren't worth a d**n. after 3 years or so they are the perfect best friend & love you so much that they would die for you without thinking. Also they are ready to play whenever you are...sometimes when you aren't.

  6. Boxers are extremely hyper dogs... they needs tons of excercise and continous training. If you have hours every day to spend excercising, playing, and training them than I think you'd love one :)

Finnish Lapphunds , I haven't heard much about but they're relatively good dogs.

Getting another Golden Retriever... Well unless it's going to be in the house for more than 14 hours a day, it won't be a good idea to have it in the heat. Unless you are planning on shaving it during the summer, they don't do well in hot conditions; As they are prone to heat strokes.

Cocker Spaniels, I think, are your best bet. They are great, loving dogs, are full of spunk and don't have TOO much energy but just enough to make a great play companion or a retired friend.

    I hope this helps :)

  7. We have a cockapoo.  He is a hybrid between a cocker spaniel and a poodle.  It is like taking the best of both breeds and putting it into one dog.  He has curly hair and the sweetest face with long curly ears that aren't too long.  He is so smart and picked up his obedience training quickly.  He is a very loving family dog that greets us with excitement and love.  He can be very active, but I am noticing that as he gets older, he is settling down more.  We did enroll him in puppy kindergarten at petco, and will be enrolling him in basic training soon, but I think this is important for all dogs--if nothing else, than for socialization with other dogs and people.  I would encourage you to google any breed that you would consider to find out the details of that breed.  There are so many great resources on the internet to help you choose which breed is best for you.

  8. I love dachsunds! They're easy to care for and get along with other dogs.

  9. Boxers are great too...u have to get something to ur personality...

  10. How about a nice friendly dog that might be sitting @ your local shelter that just might click with you.Pures are there and many fine mutts that make wonderful companion animals.

the perfect animal may just choose you there and the bonus is you saved a pooch in dire straits.

  11. they are all nice dogs you just have to pick and choose and then you can get what you want the dog you have is great i don't' kn know what else you could pick it would be too hard for me.
