I'm a cook, it's fun at times but a lot of times it is VERY VERY stressful...i cant stress, stressful enough..piled with the very high laboring in a hot kitchen...I can deal with the shoddy environment and back breaking labor though...i just really hate the very busy need to put out hundreds of plates in only a few hours part. I don't have a college degree..but i am a hard worker..however, i also don't really fit in the mainstream..so fitting in ..in a business setting would be extremely difficult for me. I'm also a musician, its the only thing I love in the world..and if i could make a living doing it...i would...playing drums good is about as useful as painting pictures..it's hobby criteria..

so I'm open for suggestions..i used to deliver pizza and i was insanely good at it..i worked at a pizza place for a while..that's why i thought i may like being a cook...but i really like the driving aspect of it better..I love driving, just can't see myself driving an 18 wheeler or anything.

so those are the two things i love doing, music and driving..and i actually do like cooking...just not as much as i had thought.

I'm looking to make in between 10-15 dollars an hour...i have no kids and being a millionaire isn't of much importance, obviously if i could make more that would be great..but like i said i don't have a degree..

so anybody have any ideas what i should do?

  1. It's hard to find that right job. But realizing what you don't want to do is a step in the right direction.

You don't have a degree. That's OK. But I would say go back to school even if the purpose is not getting a degree. You can sample a range of classes at your community college and perhaps you'll take a class just out of curiosity and you'll find that this is what you want to do. In any case you should sample a healthy range of topics to become a more enlightened and rounded person. Once you know what you want motivation follows and everything will be easier.

    Good luck my friend.

  2. if you like driving, you could drive a UPS or Fed Ex truck, I hear they get great benefits and pay good. I think FedEx employees are "independent contractors" though, which could suck cuz you have to pay all your FICA taxes yourself at the end of the year. Try UPS first.

I don't know if the Post Office even hires people anymore, so forget that.

Private courier companies also exist, so maybe try some of those in the phone book. And grocery stores also hire delivery drivers to bring groceries to homes. Schwan's is an old-school home delivery service, could be an option.

Have you ever looked into apprenticeships? They'd pay you to train on the job, to be a plumber, electrician, window fitter etc. There's a few technical jobs like sound tech which fixes speaker systems at stadiums etc. Check out your community college or unemployment office about apprenticeships. You'd be unionized too, which guarantees a great wage and benefits, those jobs will always be in-demand too.

  3. You might try x-ray inspection of welds, but if you aren't drug free forget it because they almost always drug test you and have random tests also. I've deen doing it for 18 years and have made a lot of money. Most people starting out here in Houston Texas are making around $13.50 per hour and there is almost always overtime. I'm making $26.00 per hour and haven't made less than $75,000.00 a year for the last 8 or 9 years. The only thing you need to break into this business is take a 40 hour radiation safety course. Non Destructive Testing can take you into an API Inspector's job after 5 years experiance that pays anywhere from $42.00 to $55.00 an hour. Good luck and work safe.

  4. Why not try getting a private cooking job. Cook for some rich people in their home. Then its three meals a day for a reasonable number of people. You would still have time to pursue your hobby.

  5. You're the captain of your own ship - you're free - only you can design your goal (whatever it is) you like most - then focus on it and act. you're on the right track. Hobby is important but not as a main job ... do it as you like in your leisure time.

  6. You could take a career assessment and see which careers fit you best. Good luck!
