I don't like the idea of putting a plant with a Betta because....?

I'm getting a Betta fish tomorrow and I a lot of you said to put a plant in the tank. I kinda have a problem with that because last time I had a Betta, its long tail got stuck on the plant, so my dad had to cut off half it's tail because we couldn't get it unstuck. It was really sad, but it lived for 2+ years! Does anyone know if a plant is okay?? Is there something else (cheap) I can put in there?

  1. Try duckweed. It is very small and floats at the top!

Good Luck with your new baby!

  2. well live plants can rot and make a mess on the tank but you can get silk plants like this style and it wont get stuck

yes i know its on the expensive side but its gona be worth it on the long run

  3. a live plant should be fine

just get something that is less likely for the fish to get caught in

    i like baby tears plant

i realy dont see how a betta can get caught in a live plant

please explain how it got stuck

  4. Ok, the betta needs osmething to hide in. Also, that tank is to small for a betta, they really need 1+ gallon tank.1 gallon being the minimum. I you buy silk plants there is no chance that will happen, plus silk plants with large fake leaves make good hiding spots for the fish. A 2.5 gallon tank with a lid is 12$ at petsmart! Just add gravel and a fake plant..tada! Betta tank!

  5. At places like wal-mart, or petsmart or anything like that,

you can purchase caves, and ceramic logs.

    or stuff like little signs

it really depends, if you want it for decor, or just for the fish.

i would get plants. just not very big bushy ones maybe?

like little stuck out ones.maybe that would keep the fish from getting stuck.

my 20 gal is filled with plants and i have had lots of fish in that tank before...no fish has ever got caught in mine.

just ask a profecional at petsmart or petco...ect...

  6. you don't have to get a plant. It is not a requiment. But if you do, please make sure you get a betta plant. They are soft leaves and it is impossible for them to get stuck.

    Good Luck.

  7. If it's your choice, it's your choice. It's your fish so do whatever you want. Put at least something in there so it's not just a blank tank.

  8. Definitely not that type of plastic plant.  This type of live plant or Java fern would be okay  Live plants would be best, but a plastic Amazon sword or similar plant would be okay.  With any plastic plants it's easier for them to damage their fins.  Silk would be better.

  9. if u have jsut a small bowl a single small fake plant is best cuz they just need one thing to take as there own ive never had problems with it

  10. A good way to test if a plant is safe is the pantyhose test: run the pantyhose over every possible surface of the plant. If it tears the pantyhose or gets stuck and cannot be untangled, it is not safe.

For Betta, silk plants are generally safer than plastic plants, or you can use a little ceramic or stone ornament (with no sharp edges of course) with a little hole for a hiding place.

Live plants are also ok, but generally require more care and are more expensive than fake plants.

    Hope this helps; good luck!
