i was using my laptop during a thunderstorm and then i saw a spark on the right side (where all the usb etc. ports are located) my home phone is also connected to my modem but also to my laptop and now i can't recieve or call anyone. when i connected my laptop directly to the modem (via usb), my internet began to work again. the little lights don't flash when i connect the ethernet cable in.

1. does it still work?

2. is there any way to fix it?

3. if not, what are replacement options and where can i get the replacements?

thanks for any helps

  1. If the link lights don't turn on when you plug a known-good Ethernet cable into them, then the port is probably messed up.

This is why we use surge protectors.

Call your laptop manufacturer for replacement part information.

  2. try to check the driver of your ethernet or modem

  3. Hey Sophee, First question is what operating system are you using. If it's Vista then go to control panel then Device Manager. (for XP you want control panel, system, hardware then Device Manager) you should see a list of all your internal components from your machine listed. Look under Network Adapters and see if your network card is listed. Double click it and see if it is enabled. If not, enable it and see if it starts up. If it does then plug everything back in via the network card and reboot to allow your machine to pick up a new IP address. If not then you might want to read your warranty card. Built in Laptop network cards aren`t as easy to find as for full sized PC. If you really notice the speed difference when using USB and need to go back to the network port you could buy a PC Card or Express Card (PCMCIA) version of a network adapter. These are credit card sized devices that slot into a hole at the side of your machine. These are designed to be plugged in and out and go for about $30. You will be able to install this yourself easily.

  4. try pluging the etherernet into sumeone elses router or modem and see if the light comes ion if not then its fried and as for repairing it would mean a new motherboard for the laptop and there are very expensive but if you were to get a new board the ebay is best place for good and cheap spares
