If a 2.5-mole sample of each of the following compounds is completely burned, which one would produce the most moles of water? Which would produce the fewest?

a) CH3CH2OH

b) CH3OH

c) CH3OCH3

I keep getting the same moles of water for each of them... is that right? It just doesn't seem like it would be right to me... maybe I'm wrong, I just hate myself for getting confused on a mole-mole question, up till now i figured I understood it pretty d**n well

  1. a) CH3CH2OH + 3O2 → 2CO2 + 3H2O

2.5 moles will give 7.5 moles of water.

    b) 2CH3OH + 3O2 → 2CO2 + 4H2O

2.5 moles will give 5 moles water.

    c) CH3OCH3 + 3O2 → 2CO2 + 3H2O

2.5 moles will give 7.5 moles water.

A and C are isomers, so they will react in the same fashion and have the same general reaction equation. A and C both give the same amount of water.
