  1. when a team runs they get points based on what place they get.

  2. everyone works together and cheers each other on.

you can run with someone else and they can lead for a little while.. and then you can switch off.

  3. It is rather similar to cycling where you can have your team mates help you out.  You receive both individual accolades as well as team success.  You often have about 7 in the team but only the first 5 or so places within your team score points.  The lowest team scores wins as 1 point is given to first, 2 to second etc.

  4. Johnny jack Rabbit finishes first but his next team mate comes in tenth while your team finishes 2-9 your team will win the overall meet. Cross country scoring is based on how many finish where. As long as you have more up front you don't have to be the fastest. That is for track and field events.

  5. It is usually scored by giving the first finisher 1 point, the second person 2 points, 3rd  gets 3 points, etc.  A certain number of runners constitute a team   It could be 5 or 7 or something like that.   All these points are added up, and the team with the lowest (not highest) total number of points is the winner.   If your team finished 3rd,  5th,  7th,  10th,  15th,   17th,   and 20th,  your team would have 77 points.   You would defeat any team with a higher number of points.

  6. Althogh there are some elements of teamwork that can be applied, cross country (XC) is essentially an individual sport. However (as others have noted) in high school dual meets, your place equals your score, i.e. first place is 1 point, second place is two points, etc.  The team with the lowest (not highest) score wins the meet and a score of 15 is a clean sweep or shut-out. For most dual meets an entire XC team may compete, however, it is only the first five finishers whose scores will be tallied to determine the winner. In larger, league, county and state championship meets, each team is allowed to only field 7 runners (top 7 are generally considered the varsity squad). Of that seven, the top five finishers are the ones whose scores will be tallied. For championship races, however, the races are less team oriented than the dual meets.

  7. Cross Country is confusing, as it is both an individual and team sport.

Individually, each runner is aiming to run as best they can, and to get as good a time as possible.

Cross country is a team sport when it comes to varsity.  Usually, there are 7 people per team in a varsity race.  Each person racing, when they finish, earns a certain amount of points, based on where they finish.  For example, finishing first gives your team one point, second is two points, etc.  After the race, the scores are tallied up, and the team with the fewest points wins the meet.

    Hope it helps!

  8. The runners who finish in the higher ranks get points for their team. The team with most points wins. The runners who finish near last do not get any points for their team at all. When I was in XC, it was only the first three runners who got the points for their teams. The only time where it's really an individual sport is  in invitationals (gathering of runners from all over the county or certain distance).

  9. It is a team sport as the overall score is based on how your team places overall. Also what many teams do is they haev a pacemaker. This person never expects to come first by gets everyone in the team going faster. You also use your team mates to braek the wind and to make your team go faster as a group.

    Hopes this helps

  10. more than one runner from each school runs the race. Each person gets a certain amount of points for the place they come in. at the end of the race they add up the points and whatever school's team has the least points wins.

  11. sry but i dont consider XC as a sport... i find it more like a training for other sports, such as track and field and soccer
