I don't understand how to use john the ripper on my xp?

I'm trying to download and use john the ripper and fgdumper but all that happens when I click on the exe. is that a screen flashes by really quick and disappears before I can react. I've never used programs like this. I'm trying to hack my computer to see what I need to patch over and pay attention to.
