I don't understand some people?

Question

I know a girl who keeps offering to help with things when she doesn't really mean it. Suppose I drop a pen on the floor, by mistake of course. She'll say she'll get it, and then if you really do let her get it she gives you a weird sideways look. Almost as if she expected you to say "no it's ok". Why even offer to help someone when you don't really want to?

This was just an example, I know someone who does stuff like this all the time.

Trying to make herself look good in other people's eyes, I guess.

I am sure she does mean well.  Next time, just leave the pen when she says she'll get it.

Perhaps this girl is just trying to build herself up in other people's eyes.  A lot of people like to offer help, but hope that people relieve them of their duties so that they don't have to help, but can still look like Good Samaritans.  A have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too situation.
