  3. Well here is the answer to your question!! Houris have genders!!

Quran does not say anything about 72 vigins. For other sources one must turn to the six (recognized) books of Hadith, among which Malik's Muwatta and Bukhari are more reliable. But neither Malik nor Bukhari considered their compilations perfect. Out of the other four Hadith books, Tirmidhi is the main source for the belief that martyrs may get up to 72 Houris. It was only in the sixth century A.H. that Tirmidhi's "Jami'" was accepted as one of the canonical books on Hadith. Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawud and Sunan Nasai all received acceptance before Tirmidhi's Jami'. The other source is Ibn Khatir's "tafseer" (commentary) on the Quran. In a recent translation of his work, one can find a note from the publisher saying, "We are aware that Ibn Kathir's original work does contain some weak narrations as well as a number of Traditions related from the People of the Book (i.e. Jews and Christians}." Therefore, one can say that if a theological issue only has to rest on Tirmidhi and Ibn Khatir's commentary, it probably wouldn't be considered as very reliable. [By the way, the number 72 was a significant number in Jewish mysticism and among Christian Gnostics, and that's probably how it got into Hadith literature. But that's another topic].

Quran does mention Houris and describes them as beautiful women of Paradise, who will be "married" to those men who make it to Heaven. But the exact number is not given. In Bukhari, there is a Hadith that two Houris will be given to each man, but it's narrated through Abu Huraira, a man about whose credibility many Muslims, especially the Shiah, have expressed some grave doubts about throughout Islamic

    history.

Quran makes it certain that people will enter Heaven with their wives and children: "And (as for) those who believe and their offspring follow them in faith, We will unite with them their offspring..."(52:21). Verse 40.8 also says the same thing, " Our Lord! and make them enter the gardens of perpetuity which Thou hast promised to them and those who do good of their fathers and their wives and their offspring, surely Thou are the Mighty, the Wise."

As far as the descriptions of Paradise are concerned in the Quran, the idea is that each person who believes in God and has good deeds would be rewarded in the hereafter with whatever his or her heart desires. [It is expected that a person would be wise and noble before he or she enters Heaven]. There is a well known Hadith, reported both in Bukhari and Muslim, that says, "God has said that for my good and obedient servants, I have prepared that which no eyes have seen, no ears have heard, and no heart has considered." Ibn Abbas, one of the companions of the Prophet (s.a.w), also stated that except for names, there is no comparison between what exists on earth and what will be in the hereafter.

in a chance we are sunni too!!

  4. What could a man do with 72 hyper virgins, as well? It seems like the nightmare scenario.

There is no way out of it. The religion is a threat to civilization, by its ultra-violent methodology. It must be stopped to save humanity.

  5. Its Jannah, You get whatever you want...

  6. It's punishment for virgins.

  7. Classical Arabic usage: According to classical Arabic usage in the time when the Qur'an was recited by Muhammad, Hur'in is made of two words Hur as well as In. The word 'Hur' is the plural of both Ahwar (Masculine) and Hawra (Feminine) which literally translates as "white-eyed", or persons distinguished by Hawar, signifying "intense whiteness of the eyeballs and lustrous black of the pupils." (ref: Qamus ), hence 'the purity' (ref: Tafsir al'Tabari, and Tafsir al-Razi in 3:52). And as for the phrase, "In it is the plural of both 'Ayan' (Masculine) and 'Ainao' (Feminine)", it was used to refer to the beautiful eyes of the wild-cow whose eyes are blond. In general, this word implies 'most beautiful eye' irrespective of the person's gender. Thus, the most appropriate English rendering of the compound word Hur'In will be: "Companions pure, most beautiful of eye." and it is applicable to both male and female

The houri are mentioned in several places in the Qur’an, although in plural no specific number is given to the amount of houries available. Likewise it does not appear from the Qur’an that only girls should be available; both sexes are mentioned. And they are made available to all Muslims, not just martyrs.

"Thus shall it be. And We shall pair(zawajnahoom: pair them, marry them). Note zawj (lit., “a pair” or - according to the context - “one of a pair”) applies to either of the two sexes,a man to a woman and a woman to a man, as does the transitive verb zawaja, “he paired” or “joined”, i.e., one person with another)[30]them with companions pure, most beautiful of eye."[Chapter (Surah) Ad-Dukhan (The Smoke)(44):54][31]

"In these [gardens] will be mates of modest gaze [qasirat at-tarf: Lit., “such as restrain their gaze”, i.e., are of modest bearing and have eyes only for their mates (Tafsir Razi). This phrase applies to both genders.[4]], whom neither man nor invisible being will have touched ere then." [Chapter (Surah) Ar-Rahman (The Most Beneficent(55):56][32]

"[There the blest will live with their] companions pure and modest, in pavilions [splendid] [Chapter (Surah) Ar-Rahman (The Most Beneficent)(55):72][33]

"reclining on couches [of happiness] ranged in rows!” And [in that paradise] We shall mate them with companions pure, most beautiful of eye [Chapter (Surah) At-Tur (The Mount)(52):20][34]

Here are verses that refer to one’s spouse renewal to a pure state :

"And [with them will be their] spouses, raised high: for, behold, We shall have brought them into being in a life renewed, having resurrected them as virgins [Chapter (Surah) Al-Waqi'a (The Event)(56):34-36]

And among His wonders is this: He creates for you mates out of your own kind [min anfusikum azwajan, Lit. “from among yourselves mates (spouses, one of the pair)”] so that you might incline towards them, and He engenders love and tenderness between you: in this, behold, there are messages indeed for people who think! … And He it is who creates [all life] in the first instance, and then brings it forth anew: and most easy is this for Him, since His is the essence of all that is most sublime in the heavens and on earth, and He alone is almighty, truly wise. [Chapter (Surah) Ar-Rum (The Romans)(30):21…27]

There are also verses regarding both genders explicitly:

God has promised the believers, both men and women (Lit., waalmuminoona (male believers) waalmuminatu (female believers), gardens through which running waters flow, therein to abide, and goodly dwellings in gardens of perpetual bliss: but God's goodly acceptance is the greatest [bliss of all] -for this, this is the triumph supreme! [Chapter (Surah) At-Taubah (The Repentance) (9):72]

As for anyone - be it man or woman [Lit., min (from) thakarin (male) aw (or) ontha (female)][16:97] - who does righteous deeds, and is a believer withal - him shall We most certainly cause to live a good life, and most certainly shall We grant unto such as these their reward in accordance with the best that they ever did. [Chapter (Surah) An-Nahl (The Bee) (16):97]

    A verse regarding other companionship:

“And, O our Sustainer, bring them into the gardens of perpetual bliss which Thou hast promised them, together with the righteous from among their forebears, and their spouses, and their offspring - for, verily, Thou alone art almighty, truly wise [Chapter (Surah) Ghafir (The Forgiver)(40):8]

    Classical Arabic usage

According to classical Arabic usage in the time when the Qur'an was recited by Muhammad, Hur'in is made of two words Hur and In. original verses from Quran: Here are verses that refer to one’s spouse renewal to a pure state :

"And [with them will be their] spouses, raised high: for, behold, We shall have brought them into being in a life renewed, having resurrected them as virgins [Chapter (Surah) Al-Waqi'a (The Event)

In short, You will end up with your real husband/wife in heaven.

The real meaning of 72 virgins: "White Grapes"

Modern day philologist, Christoph Luxenberg has argued that the word huri, has been misinterpreted by generations of Muslim readers as wide-eyed virgins (who will serve the faithful in Paradise; Qur'an 44:54, 52:20 ,55:72, 56:22) actually means white grapes. He suggests that the word is actually a misread from its actual meaning of "white grapes", a word often found in many Christian descriptions of Paradise as abounding in pure white grapes. This theory sparked much joking in the Western press; Muslim suicide bombers would be expecting beautiful women and getting grapes.

  8. its pretty lame if a guy gets 72 virgin guys

  9. Someone asked Imam Ali (as) about concocted traditions and contradictory sayings of the Prophet current among the people, whereupon he said:

Certainly what is current among the people is both right and wrong, true and false, repealing and repealed, general and particular, definite and indefinite, exact and surmised. Even during the Prophet's days false sayings had been attributed to him, so much so that he had to say during his sermon that, "Whoever attributes falsehoods to me makes his abode in h**l." Those who relate traditions are of four categories,  no more.

    First: The lying hypocrites

The hypocrite is a person who makes a show of faith and adopts the appearance of a Muslim; he does not hesitate in sinning nor does he keep aloof from vice; he wilfully attributes false things against the Messenger of Allah - may Allah bless him and his descendants. If people knew that he was a hypocrite and a liar, they would not accept anything from him and would not confirm what he says.

Rather they say that he is the companion of the Prophet, has met him, heard (his sayings) from him and acquired (knowledge) from him. They therefore accept what he says. Allah too had warned you well about the hypocrites and described them fully to you. They have continued after the Holy Prophet. They gained positions with the leaders of misguidance and callers towards h**l through falsehoods and slanderings. So, they put them in high posts and made them officers over the heads of the people, and amassed wealth through them. People are always with the rulers and after this world, except those to whom Allah affords protection. This is the first of the four categories.

    Second: Those who are mistaken

Then there is the individual who heard (a saying) from the Holy Prophet but did not memorise it as it was, but surmised it. He does not lie wilfully. Now, he carries the saying with him and relates it, acts upon it and claims that: "I heard it from the Messenger of Allah." If the Muslims come to know that he has committed a mistake in it, they will not accept it from him, and if he himself knows that he is on the wrong he will give it up.

    Third: Those who are ignorant

The third man is he who heard the Prophet ordering to do a thing and later the Prophet refrained the people from doing it, but this man did not know it, or he heard the Prophet refraining people from a thing and later he allowed it, but this man did not know it. In this way he retained in his mind what had been repealed, and did not retain the repealing tradition. If he knew that it had been repealed he would reject it, or if the Muslims knew, when they heard it from him, that it had been repealed they would reject it.

    Fourth: Those who memorise truthfully

The last, namely the fourth man, is he who does not speak a lie against Allah or against His Prophet. He hates falsehood out of fear for Allah and respect for the Messenger of Allah, and does not commit mistakes, but retains (in his mind) exactly what he heard (from the Prophet), and he relates it as he heard it without adding anything or omitting anything. He heard the repealing tradition, he retained it and acted upon it, and he heard the repealed tradition and rejected it. He also understands the particular and the general, and he knows the definite and indefinite, and gives everything its due position.

The sayings of the Prophet used to be of two types. One was particular and the other common. Sometimes a man would hear him but he would not know what Allah, the Glorified, meant by it or what the Messenger of Allah meant by it. In this way the listener carries it and memorises it without knowing its meaning and its real intention, or what was its reason. Among the companions of the Messenger of Allah all were not in the habit of putting him questions and ask him the meanings, indeed they always wished that some Bedouin or stranger might come and ask him (peace be upon him) so that they would also listen. Whenever any such thing came before me, I asked him about its meaning and preserved it. These are the reasons and grounds of differences among the people in their traditions.

  10. okay dear shakila,

    I am sunni too.

It's okay to not understand the 72 virgins thing..

You have to look for information on how heaven has been described in the Qur'aan and Sunnah.  Only then you would fully know. but here is a bit abt it:

72 virgins are houris, a different creation of Allah than the human of us who will go to heaven.  Islaam describes that as reward for those who go for Jihaad (defend Islaam for the sake of Allah).  That doesn't mean 72 is a limit or must. And women will also have rewards for their deeds, but in general women don't go fight jihaad, and therefore it is not mentioned.  Also many of the reward of women aren't mentioned from the wisdom of Allah.  If you imagine the Qur'aan saying women would have 30 husbands it is obsene for this world and places women down like prostitutes according to the rules and descriptions of this world.  If you look at men, specially the non-muslim ones, they always/often talk about "women", and if you look at the women, they talk about being "pretty".  And from Islaam we know the women of heaven would be the prettiest ones to their husband.

Heaven will have every pleasure of this earth (for men and women) multiplied in ways we cannot imagine.  And it will lack all the unpleasant or negative things in ways we cannot imagine.

And most of all, Allah promised all the people of heaven complete happiness, peace and peace... and Allah keeps His promises!

And ofcourse, the Islaam haters would always bring these up, and no point debating because the ones that will NOT accept Islaam, they will only increase their bashing.

  11. virgins can be both male and female

a virgin is any person who have has never had s*x

    agrees with kinza

now if you get anything you want in heaven, anything you can ask for, then what would you ask for, chocolate? food? or would you  ask for something else.........

    EDIT:

the 72 virgins thing is in an obscure hadith.

the quran itself doesnt specify the number of huur and it doesnt even specify their gender

  12. No.  They are 72 servants.  Each women in Jinnah gets 72 servants to serve them.  BUT the majority of women(both Muslim, and non Muslim) are in h**l for eternity because they are unappreciative towards their husbands, and very materialistic(you see this all the time in countries like Saudi Arabia among the female Ummah).  Since the majority of Muslim and non Muslim women are in Hellfire for eternity, then the man who is in Jinnah without his wife can have s*x with the female servants so his sexual needs are met.  If a man's wife/wives are in Jinnah with him, then his wife/wives will be 1,000 times more beautiful then their servants.

  13. In shorter terms, there are no 72 virgins; it's an unsimplified hadith.

Houri are mostly defined as "basfhful maidens that ARE virgins."

Qur'an does not say u will have sexual intercourse with them.

    Houris aren't gender-specific.

Mostly non-Muslims come up with this ignorant stuff because they follow their teachings through a dumb cartoon (family guy).

    They know nothing.

But in the end, only Allah knows.

  14. It's not virgins, it's actually Houri.

And Suicide Bombers DO NOT get them!

And what's a woman going to do with 72 virgins???
