I know how to crochet and all, but I don't understand how to read the patterns for different projects. I want to crochet a pair of slippers, and i can't get past the first round. This is the first part of the instructions i'm working off of:

Foot section

1. WITH 2 STRANDS OF YARN THROUGHOUT, Chain 3, 9 hdc in first ch. Join to first hdc (not beg ch)-(9 hdc)

2. Ch 2, hdc in same as joining, 2 hdc around (inc made). Join to ch 2 (18)

3. Ch 2, hdc in next 2 sts, inc, (hdc in next 3sts, inc) around to last 2 sts. hdc in each of next 2 sts. Join (22)

4. Ch 2, hdc in same as joining, hdc around. Join to FIRST HDC. (21)

5-8. Ch 2, hdc around. Join (21)

Thanks!!

  1. you and me both.

  2. The way I see it  you make a chain of 3 stitches then you make 9 half double crochet  all in the first stitch. When you've done the 9 join with a slip stitch to the top of the First HDC. You would have made a circle. Try it. I did.

  3. Check out some sites on pattern reading:

Let me give you some step by step instructions:

    1.  Two strands of yarn means to hold two strands as if they were one.  When I do this, I have two skeins of the same color, but you can also just use both ends from the same skein.  Make a slip knot on your hook and chain 3.  Make 9 half double crochet (hdc) in the first chain you made (otherwise known as the third chain from your hook).  When you have made 9 half double crochet, join with a slip stitch to the first half double crochet you made (not the part you chained).  You should have a total of 9 half double crochet in that round.

    2.  Chain 2, half double crochet in the same stitch where you joined.  Make 2 half double crochet stitches in EACH stitch around [when you make two stitches in the same place, this can be referred to as an "increase" (inc)].  You should have a total of 18 half double crochet around.  Join with a slip stitch to the chain 2 you made at the beginning of the round.

    3.  Chain 2, make one half double crochet in the next two stitches (I read this as meaning that you DON'T made a hdc in the same stitch were you have the chain 2).  In the next stitch, make 2 half double crochet, then make one half double crochet in each of the next three stitches, then make 2 half double crochet in the next stitch.  The part in parentheses (hdc in next 3 sts, inc) is repeated from there on until you reach the last two stitches, which you make one half double crochet into each.  This should give you a total of 22 half double crochet.  Join with a slip stitch to the beginning chain 2.

    4.  Chain 2, make one half double crochet in the same stitch as the chain 2, then make only one half double crochet in each stitch around.  This time when you join with a slip stitch, you join it to the first half double crochet you made--not the chain 2.  This should give you a total of 21 stitches.

5-8 is a repeat of round 4.  The only thing I would worry about here is that you make sure you have 21 stitches in each round.  If you don't, join each round to the chain 2, not the first hdc.  If you go have 21 around, then great!

I hope I was clear enough.
