So they say, that the team winning the coin toss now has a chance to defer to the second half, but I mean, hasn't that always been a choice?

  1. The away team calls it in the air (heads or tails). The winning team chooses either to receive, kick, or defer. If they receive, the other team will get the ball after the 1st half. if they kick, they get it at the 2nd half. if they differ, the other team picks.

  2. Sorry I can't answer your question, but I was wondering the same thing! If you won the toss you HAD to receive before this year? that doesn't make any sense...

  3. The NFL used to allow the team that won the toss to chose between two options:

    1) Kick or receive

    2) Pick a side of the field

The team that lost the toss would to choose the remaining option.

Then, in the second half the team that lost the toss would pick one of the two options, and the team that won the toss would pick the remaining one.

Now, they added a third option which is to allow the team that won to toss to defer their first choice to the second half.  This basically means that they will kick now and receive in the second half, but in some rare cases, would allow them to chose the direction they will go in case they really want the wind in the fourth quarter.

  4. When team A wins a coin toss and they defer then team B picks whether to kick or receive and then team A picks to kick or receive next half

  5. Prior to this year, the team that won the toss could elect to kick off or receive (Sometimes wind, and other weather conditions yould cause the winner to kick off so they could receive in the 2nd half). This year, the team that wins can defer the initial choice to the losing team, which gives the winning team choice of goal and choice of 2nd half options.

  6. Ok.. This is how I understand this new rule.. the team winning coin toss can let another team decide to kick or receive the ball if they want too.. but they will have the decision back in second half.. I may be wrong but that how I think it is..
