Just as we have family Drs for common ailments, we also have specialists for more specific physical ailments...like an Orthopedic Surgeon would fix our broken bones.   In the psychiatric field, we have specialists too.   A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor too - he specializes in how our brain works, in how we behave, and our brain chemistry.  His specialty these days is most commonly dealing with prescription Psych Medications...these are medications designed and intended to be used to help people who think and behave in ways that prevent them from living in a normal way.......to use these medications to help them perform as close to normal as they possibly can.

A Psychologist is also known as a Dr., but a PHD and cannot prescribe medications.   Their specialty is in understanding people's thought and behavior patterns, and working with that person to assist them to think and behave in ways that will help them to be able to live independently in society, free of unreasonable fears, functional in society and in relationships, able to reason, and to not be run by irrational emotions.   A psychologist may specialize in particular disorders / problems and how to address those.

A Therapist or Counselor or MSW Master of Social Work

tend to be more of a generalist in helping people to address the difficult areas of a person's thought process or emotions or relationships or disturbing memories.  They work with the client to help him understand his emotional responses, and can be helpful in coaching the person to learn ways to behave that will work better for the person and his relationships.   Examples: Anger Management,

Marriage Counseling, Rape/ Trauma recovery, Grief recovery, Depression, Crisis management
