  1. Russia wants to control the rich oil and natural gas reserves in the Caspian Sea basin. If Russia cannot control Georgia, the West can reach oil and natural gas reserves through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey while bypassing Russia. To Russia, oil and natural gas are economically irreplaceable and a political tool. Apparently, they do not want to lose the power they have.

  2. I'll try to explain this to you by imagining a situation.

Say the US and Canada are one federal country, call it America.

The president of America, for unknown reasons decides to reorganize the federal borders. He decides to push the borders of British Columbia to the south, making the state of Washington a part of BC.

Years after this, after the death of the leader America collapses and 2 countries merge : the USA and Canada. The US has a real problem, their ppl from Washington are in Canada (BC). The americans in the Washington state are refusing the rule of a tyrant from Canada. Canada responds by force and starts the bloodshed. American forces enter Washington, which is internationally Canadian but the ppl in it are all American.

Now, let's bring it to the Russa- Georgia situation. Russia in this case is America, Georgia is Canada. Ossetia is the State of Washington, the tyrannic canadian leader is the president of Georgia and the dead president of ex-America is Stalin.

I hope this makes sense to you.
