I don't understand this. How does god speak?

I see many on here saying god speaks to them.

Well how? What do people mean by that?

It seems to me it's been complete silence from any gods because I've heard no god speak.

What most people mean is the still small voice. It's almost like your own thought, but you know it is not yourself. God also spoke openly in the past- even Jesus (who was not there) spoke to Paul the Apostle- and all the men around Paul, who were atheists and were persecuting the Christians, heard the voice. God speaks in other ways as well. He gave Moses the 10 commandments in the form of stone tablets from the mountain. God also speaks to us about his greatness just in creation itself, if you learn to look at it that way.

The Bible records God speaking audibly to people many times (Exodus 3:14; Joshua 1:1; Judges 6:18; 1 Samuel 3:11; 2 Samuel 2:1; Job 40:1; Isaiah 7:3; Jeremiah 1:7; Acts 8:26; 9:15 – this is just a small sampling). There is no Biblical reason why God could not or would not speak to a person audibly today. With the hundreds of times the Bible records God speaking, we have to remember that they occur over the course of 4000 years of human history. God speaking audibly is the exception, not the rule. Even in the Biblically recorded instances of God speaking, it is not always clear whether it was an audible voice, an inner voice, or a mental impression.

God does speak to people today. First, God speaks to us through His Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Isaiah 55:11 tells us, “so is my word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” The Bible records God’s words to us in everything we need to know in order to be saved and live the Christian life. 2 Peter 1:3-4 declares, “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.”

Secondly, God speaks through impressions, events, and thoughts. God helps us to discern right from wrong through our consciences (1 Timothy 1:5; 1 Peter 3:16). God is in the process of conforming our minds to think His thoughts (Romans 12:2). God allows events to occur in our lives to direct us, change us, and help us to grow spiritually (James 1:2-5; Hebrews 12:5-11). 1 Peter 1:6-7 reminds us, “In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith – of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire – may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.”

Finally, yes, God likely does sometimes speak audibly to people. It is highly doubtful, though, that this occurs as often as some people claim it does. Again, even in the Bible, God speaking audibly is the exception, not the ordinary. If anyone claims that God has spoken to him/her, always compare what is said with what the Bible says. If God were to speak today, His words would be in full agreement with what He has said in the Bible. God does not contradict Himself. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 proclaims, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

It depends on the type of relationship you have with God.  God can speaks to you through people or He may put thoughts or feelings in your heart.

You must understand that to hear God you must know him first.  You must ask to receive the holy Spirit and you must listen with your spirit.  His Spirit and your spirit will communicate as long as you listen and have faith than he will talk with you through his holy Spirit.  If you are listening for gods to speak, you do not know God and he will not speak to you until, like I said get to know him.  Read the bible and get to know God and he will communicate with you once you have asked him to.  But you must ask Him not some other god or gods.

Well, it's usually not in a "booming voice from the sky" that you seem to believe.

It's that "still, small voice" in your mind that guides you, tells you when you're doing something wrong. Some people call it a "conscience", we call it The Holy Spirit.

At other times, we may pray for something, and then shortly afterward, our prayer is answered in a real, physical way.

There is something that separates man from animals that something is that small little voice that says ".Don't do that "or "That wasn't nice". That small little voice is God telling us the right ,good, kind and loving thing to do.Then He also speaks to us in creation look about at all the beauty around us He is saying "I Love You "then he speaks to us through His Son telling us to" love one another to be truthful and kind and caring people".And also every page of His written word is His communication to us His thoughts are on every page and they penetrate our hearts souls and spirits .When I see a newborn baby God says to me "here is a innocent ,look at it ,no anger violence,no hatred,no sin ,A reflection of purity ."A reflection of me' Is there anything more beautiful then an innocent newborn sleeping contentedly? They have no speech but they speak a message if we listen.Be still and know that I am God.Sometimes in the hussel and bussel of our busy lives we have to take a deep breath and be still and listen to the voice within.Then we will hear the voice of God because He is in each and everyone of us.God has been speaking to you really He has just be still and pray and listen you will hear Him.
