I don't understand this from the movie 21?

What is the whole counting cards thing? How does it work, I don't understand the point. What does it do?

In  a nutshell, card coutning involves assigning point values to cards, and adding the points to a total as the cards are dealt.  You then, according to specific rules change your bets and play hands slightly different based on that information.

O.k the 2,3,4,5,6,= -1                                                                the 7,8,9,=0                                                                               and the10,J,Q,K,A=+1                                                                              So if the dealer as a 'J' that =+1 and you have a '6' that = 1 and a 'K' that = +1 the count is +1 the higher the number the less 10,J,Q,K,A  the lower the more 10,J,Q,K,A  But it's a lot deeper then that and not easy to do. good luck

I've not seen the movie.

But the basic concept of counting cards is that high value cards like 10 or Ace are good for the player, whereas low value cards are better for the dealer.

A card counter keeps track of the cards dealt from the shoe as they hit the table.  He keeps a running count in his head of good cards versus bad cards.  So he knows when the deck is in his favor and when it is in the dealers favor.  He bets big when there is a good count and less when there is a bad count.

By knowing when the deck is heavy with good player cards, it is possible to neutralize the house edge and take advantage of that information to be a profitable player.

Unfortunately, casinos don't like this too much.  So if you are a good card counter they will ask you to leave, and if necessary ban you from their casino.  Unlike in the movie they are not going to take you into a room and beat you up.  Casinos are big corporations these days.  They don't beat people up.

you got it backwards m.  (2,3,4,5,6= plus1)( 7,8,9 = 0 )(10,j,q,k,a= negative1)  high positive count means more high value cards, good for the player.  It is actually simple to do, just practice counting for a good while and it comes naturally.  With all that being said, go to varrying your bets and jacking them on high count, you will eventually get caught (especially now that the movie is out they will be looking) and you will be asked politely to leave and never come back.
