The question is: "Feeling that the committee had too hastily decided several important issues, Councilman Chambers asked for further consideration be given to his colleague's proposal. "

The grammar problem is "asked for" in the sentence, but why? Can anyone tell me?

  1. "Councilman Chambers asked for further consideration be given to his colleague's proposal."

First, take out the modifier "further" just to make things easier to see.

"Councilman Chambers asked for [] consideration be given to his colleague's proposal."

Read it out loud. Do you see it now? It should be "asked THAT"

  2. It should be "asked that" further consideration be given

To use "asked for," you would have to change the ending to further consideration TO be given.
