Question:

I don't want my fish to die, what do I do?

With Hurricane Ike churning possibly right at me, I may have to evacuate. Problem is, my fish will be left behind, more likely than not without power. I don't know how long I'd be gone, but I'd like for my fish to be able to eat. What is the best way for them to get fed if I leave? The power would most likely be down, so a plug in automatic feeder wouldn't work. I also don't know too much about the food blocks, though I've heard a few times that they dirty up the tank too much.

My daily tank foods:

5 Gallon: Six betta pellets daily ( 3 2X a day)

A half an algae wafer

10 Gallon: A pinch of tropical flakes (2X a day)

What can I do to be sure that all of my fish will live?

  1. I may not know a lot about fishes but if you can find large Ziplocks yo can take one fill it with water and put your fish inside with the food you give him and then put the bag with the fish inside another one (Repeat about 3 more times). Try to not spill the water everytime you give him food. Then hide it in your purse, bag, baggage, or even under a jacket. The extra bags are for protection and in case the bag with water breaks the water and the fish passes to the other bag.

  2. Dont feed them.  They can live off the algae until you get back.  If you start putting food into an unfiltered tank the ammonia will build up in a matter of hours.  Fish can go a lot longer without food then we think.

  3. Ok get special pyramid feeder that every pet store sells and put it in. Some of them may least for more than a week, you may also get automatic feeder.

    Hope it helped.

I found this website useful for my aquarium, you may also try it.

  4. yes i would say the food blocks and you dont really need to worry about the dirty water. you shoudn't be evacuated that long. i would also suggest some time of tarp or cover to be pinned down across it if possible. the hurricane might not directly go over it but it would protect them in a way from huge drops of hail

god bless your creatures i hope all is well with them and yourself

    take care

  5. shouldn't u be more worried about other things...like ur family and stuff especially because of a hurricane rather than pet fish that u can easily by at a pet store

  6. Take it to the vet!
