It to test to make sure your insides are clean. Its a q-tip like thing (more like a pipe cleaner) and they scrap on the inside walls of your v****a and near or on the cervix. They then test it to see if you have any STD's or to see if you have anything else. Its not just for STD;s you have good and bad bacteria inside your v****a at all times but if you have a low count of good and a high count of bad you get  bacterial vaginitise. (which more then 85% of all women get it) it also tests for cervical cancer and other health problems.  Its good to go to your doc and get this done once a year after you become sexually active.

He/she swabs the cervix and then that sample is sent to a lab to check for cancer cells

A small sample of cells is taken from the cervix and examined.  Certain changes in the cells can indicate  inflammation, potentially precancerous changes or, very rarely, cervical cancer.

While some people use the term to refer to any pelvic exam, it IS a very specific test.  While it may provide clues to the presence of infection, it doesn't diagnose infections.

Some doctors don't do routine pap smears during pregnancy since the normal changes in the cervix that happen at this time can make it hard to read. However, if the woman has never had a pap, or is very overdue for her regular one, most doctors will do one. (Really major changes like cancer or severe dysplasia would be obvious.  It's the lesser changes that would be hard to diagnose/detect.)

In your case, if you had had a pap in the previous 1-2 years, probably the doctor wouldn't bother to do one.  But yesterday's questioner had obviously never had a pelvic exam of any kind, so the doctor WOULD want to do a thorough one.
