Also come on look at the time line they jsut happened to have 50000 mean and 1000 tanks along the border the same day as the olympics they've been planning this for weeks if not months

  2. GOOD QUESTION ! I think its a great way to start a major war between major power players. Let's face it. The USA wanted to put a missile system in Georgia and Russia didn't care for that at all. I say it was planned in such a way to get Russia to take part in order for other nations to give the go ahead for the USA to install missiles on their territory because Russia looks like a *** hole country and can't be trusted which everybody in world knew that to begin with anyhow....LOL....read the following that tells of what i just said concerning others countries wanting the USA missile system.....

Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk attends a media conference on the hosting of a U.S. missile shield in front of the Prime Minister Chancellery in Warsaw August 11, 2008. In July, Tusk rejected the latest U.S. offer to establish a missile shield in the country, saying Poland's security must be enhanced in return for hosting the shield, strongly opposed by Warsaw's former overlord Russia. Tusk said at the conference that this was even more the case in view of the fighting in South Ossetia between Russia and Georgia.

  3. Read the link below. It is an excellent collection of questions and answers on this situation.

  4. Georgia attacked South Ossetia, killed over 1500 civilians and violated a peace treaty Georgia had with South ossetia since 1991 ( South Ossetia won independence ).

Georgia violated the treaty, tried to make a land-grab and killed South Ossetians, many of whom had Russian citizenship. Russia came in to protect their citizens and to protect the South ossetians against Georgia

    Thats the short version.

  5. The Russian dictator is trying create an imbalance in the oil and gas markets.  The Georgian people are life loving sorts who had a relatively independent existence during the USSR period being in the extreme south of the old Soviet Union.   Georgia is just being mugged.   Plain and simple.

  6. In 1991 when the USSR broke up, Georgia gained freedom, but some of their provinces, including the now Russian controlled South Ossieta, wanted to remain Russian. In 92 these Russian supporters fought a war in which they gained de facto independence from Georgia and since then they have been at odds with the Georgian govt. In 2004 the current Georgian president, Mikheil Saakaskvili was elected on the promise of unifying Georgia and on Friday his forces invaded SO. But the Russians used this as a excuse to defend their citizens (most people in SO had been given Russian passports) and have been hitting Georgia hard ever since. Until today they had the excuse of saying it was for defense, but with them now hitting Georgian bases and towns outside of this area, the war has turned into one of aggression and conquest for Russia.

Forgot, Georgia is also contemplating joning NATO, and the worst fear of Russia is to have it's southern border ringed with small NATO member states.

  7. Ossetians want to be Russians, their territory belongs to Georgia. Some Ossetians started a resistance and attacked Georgians interests, the Georgians responded and were pretty brutal, which is pretty much customary in the area, but still brutal.

Russia gave the Ossetians citizenship, which is illegal under international law. Ossetia is recognized as Georgian territory and they didn't "win Independence".

Russia has been stoking this and watching, probably coordinating with Ossetian rebels to start trouble right as the Olympics started. They used the pretext of protecting Ossetians to invade Georgia, which they are doing, going way past Ossetia to the capitol and cutting the country in half as it sits now.

Russia wants to control their border countries as the USSR did, and the flow of oil in the region. That is the goal, the restoration of the USSR and with more control of oil.

Russia attempted to help Iraq against the US in the War and leading up to the war. They had advisers there and were selling them arms. China was also helping Iraq, and they had France involved. Russia was hoping at the time to back Iraq in a quest of the middle east. You can see by their actions and the goals we know they have pursued, that's what they were after. It's surely what Saddam was after, he made no secret of that.

This is a grave situation, which will only get worse if we ignore it. I hope we learned something from how we treated Hitler before WWII, because those who let him go on his way really screwed up, and cost the rest of the world dearly.

  8. Depends on who you ask..... Georgia claims South Ossetia....Russia claims South Ossetia......South Ossetia claims South Ossetia..... this conflict has been brewing for almost 20 years.....

The bottom line is......It is none of our business.....nobody elected us "Big Brother'.....Nobody gave us the job of "world police force"

Bill Clinton got over 4,000 American servicemen killed interfering in the internal affairs of other countries..... Unless it is a direct threat against America.....it is none of our business
