I dont get how the scopes power works?

it is like #-#x## or 40mm or 30mm and #x# i don't understand it how much power does that mean just get me a example and explain it plz also will green/red dot scopes zoom in or do they just show the dot. and a bout the green/red dot scope i am looking for on under 100 u.s. dollars what kind are good

  1. Using 3-9x40mm as an example.

    3-9 refers to the magnification at 3x stuff will look 3 times closer, at 5x five times closer, and so on up to 9x. The 40mm refers to the size of the objective lens (big lens on the front). Thats important because the bigger the objective the more light it will gather and the better the picture will be in lower light situations. On red dot scopes a number like 30mm usually just refers to the size of the tube not any particular lens.

    Most dot scopes don't magnify, especially ones for under $150. Aimpoint offers some red dots that magnify and they also have a separate magnifier that you can mount behind your red dot. But anything from Aimpoint is going to cost a bundle.
