  1. The price on the sign is the amount of money per gallon of gasoline you have to pay.

So 1 gallon of gas might cost $2.959.  If your car's tank needs 15 gallons to be filled, you'll pay $44.89 for 15 gallons of gas.

  2. Different auto manufacturers require different grades of gasoline, so there are three common grades. If you have a car that only requires the lowest grade, you'll get more gasoline for the $20 you're spending than the owner of a Lotus Elan will.

If you run a lower octane than is required, you run the risk of voiding your warranty, destroying your engine, and having to face the cost of engine replacement. The difference in price per gallon is cheap insurance against that.

Diesel engines require diesel fuel, which is a different product than gasoline. It competes, more so than gasoline, in several different markets, hence a higher price more often than not. Diesel engines aren't cheap.

So you buy what you need, you buy what's required. Or you get to rent a car or walk for a few days, while you're having your engine replaced.

  3. It is required by law in most States hat the price be posted. When you got to buy hamburgers at McDonald's they have the price on the menu. Don't you want to know how much something is going to cost before you buy it?

  4. the prices on the sign tells the price of one gallon of each type of fuel.  this gives you a method of calculating how much gas you get for your $20. if it's a $1 a gallon. you get 20 gallons. if it's $4 a gallon you get 5 gallons. you need this information so you'll know you can get to where you want to go. and you don't have to be a driver to ask  questions. good luck!
