  1. It's technology that is really small.

  2. Nanotechnology exploits the physical properties that matter exhibits as it transitions from the macroscale, where bulk properties of matter govern its behavior, to the atomic scale where quantum and atomic behavior of atoms becomes apparent.

Nanotechnology is generally composed of nanomaterials, which is a material having at least one dimension in the 1-100 nm range (1 nm = 1e-9 m = 5 hydrogen atoms long); nanotools which are the metrolgic systems like electron microscopes, AFMs etc; and nanodevices where some device is constructed/tested with the former items.

Nanotechnology is showing up in computer transistors, specialty coatings and modern detectors among other technologies.

  3. nano is a prefix that means 10^-9

nano technology in very literal terms would be something like a computer chip that is constructed on the scale of nanometers (1x10^-9 m), but is often used as a generalized term for "very small" technology.
