  1. African Hedgehogs (the domestic species kept as a pet primarily in North America) are prone to several diseases and disorders. Some are treatable, and others are not. Some are genetic and there is no way to keep a hedgehog from getting it. With proper prevention, some others can be avoided. Here is some information on some of the more common disorders:

WHS: Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome is a genetic paralyzing disorder for which there is no cure. It starts out with just a minor limp and increases to a 'drunk' like state eventually ending in death. It is usually slow to progress. The International Hedgehog Registry works with breeders to track this disease in breeding lines and discontinue them to help end this disease.

Cancer: Another disease that is nearly impossible to prevent, it is most commonly in the form of oral and mammary tumours, although others are also frequently occuring. Being such a small animal, it is very hard or even impossible to remove them.

Mites: This is the only preventable and treatable disease that I have mentioned. Mites are little white bugs that infest the animal causing dry skin, quill loss and if left untreated, internal infections and more serious ailments. Selamectin is the most preferred medication used to both prevent and treat an infestation. It is marketed under the brand name 'Revolution' and your vet will show you how to properly administer it.

    Good luck!

  2. Maybe you could take it to the vets often ..to not let the hedgehog have it.(checkup)

    Hope this helped

  3. It's not a disease, the prickles on their backs are natural, all hedgehogs have them.
