  1. Your dentist can tell you for sure.  If you do have a cavity, they use a needle to inject a little novocain in the gum near the tooth.  It makes the tooth numb.  They drill, usually with a high-speed drill, and it usually doesn't hurt.  Depending on the cavity and the location, you might feel a twinge, but often you don't feel anything.  Then they insert some silver (if it's in the back) or some white stuff (if it's in the front).  When they're done, it's as good as new.  The novocain wears off in about an hour.

Don't put off going to the dentist, though.  You should be going twice a year, and if you're experiencing any pain at all, like you're describing, you should make an appointment and go now.  If you do have a cavity, and you wait too long, it will only get worse.

  2. Hi!  It sounds like you do have a cavity.  I've only had one cavity in my life and it was small so I didn't know I had it. It was a couple years ago and I was 12.  I was scared to death!  My mom wanted me to have laughing gas, but I thought that would make me look like a baby.  But she made me get it.  I fell in love with that stuff.  It was so cool.  It felt like a lucid dream ( the kid were you no that your dreaming).  I had to have a shot but with the gas on it felt like a poke and I didn't care!  YOu should go to the dentist ASAP to get it fixed so it doesn't get worse.  And I totally recommend the gas.  I like it so much I thought about getting another cavity!  But I didn't.  Good luck!

P.S. sorry I couldn't tell you if a cavity getting fill hurts with out the gas.

  3. If your tooth hurts only when you eat hard things, it may be cracked. The pressure from biting on it causes pain. You should definitely call the dentist and get it checked out. You'll probably need a filling or maybe even a crown. Neither of these hurt to have done. They give you anesthetic and you can't feel a thing. The vibration of the drill feels weird in your mouth, but it doesn't hurt. Bring some music with you to listen to and help distract you.

  4. It sounds like a cavity to me. You should call your dentist. No, filling a cavity does not hurt. All they do is numb you, then the doctor will remove all of the decay with a drill (sounds bad but you do not feel a thing), and then once the decay is removed they will fill it with resin which is tooth colored. Its actually very easy and should take an hour at the most. You definetly do not need to be put asleep. If you have a fear of the dentist then usually most offices have "laughing gas" It makes you a little out of it but you still know what they are doing. Hope this helps

  5. Hi there, I'm 23 and seem to have "weak" teeth.  So far I think i've had like 10 fillings.  They usually do not put you to sleep, they use one to two "freezing" needles to make one side of your mouth numb. The needle just feels like a little pinch and you can sometimes feel them moving around, doesn't hurt!  They fill the cavity, and let you go home. Freezing feeling comes out about 2-6 hours later.   I just got all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled thursday, and still recovering from that lol..
