  1. Lard. It comes in a can, it's white and has the texture thicker than butter.

  2. you can use butter instead

  3. Animal or vegetable fat (lard) Most people substitute butter/margarine when recipe calls for shortening.

  4. Crisco (brand name) or any store brand that says it is shortening. also called LARD. It is animal or vegetable fat that is solid form. Oil is liquid form. can substitute butter or margarine on most recipes that call for shortening if you have none.

  5. Shortening is solid vegetable fat made from hydrogenated vegetable oil that stays solid at room temperature.  Shortening is not lard.  Lard is made from animal fats usually pork fat.  Sometimes lard and shortening are used in place of one another.

You can find it at the grocery store under the brand Crisco.  It comes in large cans and sticks (that resemble sticks of butter). Do not by whipped shortening.

Cookeen is a common brand in the UK.  (I've not used that brand. I do not know how this is packaged).

I do not know what you are making so I can't tell you exactly what to substitute.  But in most recipes you can use butter, lard, or stick margarine.  Don't use the soft margarine that comes in tubs.
