i have an asus eee pc 2gb surf with linux and i wanna download programs such as audacity and java to play online games such as runescape also on the asus web site under downloads it says download open sorce code

I think when they say it is OPEN SOURCE CODE they mean its FREE.

"Open source" means that you can get the source code to view and/or modify. Source code is what is written in the "programming languages", like C, C++. Pascal, assembly, etc... A "compiler" turns that code into a program that you can actually run and use. The benefit of you being able to get the source code means that you can change it to work the way you want it to.
