I know about this issue,

I would suggest use WMP to the minimum,

Solution :

Download Divx player free from internet, install it and see the video in it.

Other wise.

Download mplayer for free from internet, install it and open the avi from mplayer and you should get sound...

well, this may be related to a codec problem. the best thing you can do is install an all-including codec pack like the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack which will enable you to play almost any and every file that you can find on this earth. it also includes media player classic which has features that good-looking windows media player can only dream about.  please give it a try.

Windows Media Player is not a good player for videos, for songs great, but for videos, no. The best one is VLC Media Player, it never fails and its free, I'm sure that will work, but if it doesn't, there must be a problem with the .avi file. Hope this helps.

You need to download the .avi codec for Windows Media Player in order to play the file properly. Personally, I think a better solution would be to download VLC Media Player, which plays virtually any video file you throw at it, without having to download extra codecs: http://filehippo.com/download_vlc/

K-Lite Codec's (321) dont bother configuring, its an interactive program, leave all the box's blank...download...job done..now try your video.

VLC PLAYER HAS NEVER, EVER, failed me, and it never will.

downloading codecs and stuff seems kind of silly whenv vlc is such a small and powerful package

download avi codec first, like divx or xvid from their offcial website, if it still can't work, you can try a video converter to convert avi to wmv to have a try,  I always use Movavi Video Converter , if you need it, you can free download it here,

download the file converter SUPER and put the avi in and convert it to wmv. It should work fine. If it doesn't then it was something wrong with the file itself.

You need the codec for it to play properly.

I use avi codec notifier, it tells you what codec you need to play any file you have

One of the codecs is missing. Download the ffdshow codec from here, and install it:
