Question:

I drain the bathtub then hear a gurgling sound from the other drains in my house...?

It's on the first floor of a ranch/rambler. The basement toilet bubbles and I hear gurgling sounds in the kitchen sink. My thinking is that something's about to back up. Should I be concerned? What should I do to correct the problem?

  1. If you have a plumbing vent on your roof, use your garden hose and run water down it--or a bucket of water will work too.  It worked for us.

P.S.  Don't fall off the roof

  2. no gurgling is not normal check your roof vents you may have more the one if your vents are cloged you could pull the water in your traps and let sewer gas into your house

  3. This sounds like the beginning of a problem.  The same thing happened to me and I ended up having the pipes cleaned out.  There use a buildup of hair and grease in the piping.  I hope this will help you.

  4. it does sound like the venting to your drains is blocked up or simply doesn't exist

as the bath empties and the water runs at full bore down the waste pipe, a vacuum is being created in the drainage system.  this vacuum is then sucking the water out of the other waste traps in the house (causing the gurgling sound).  when the system is vented properly air will be drawn into the system as the bath empties and a vacuum cannot form.

so - check for the presence of a drain vent or check its not blocked.  if you have birds nesting in it, buy a wire or plastic cage that will let air in but keep birds out.

i'd also advise a vent pipe is not less than 3-4" in diameter to let sufficient air into the system.

  5. I sounds like u  just don't have enough drain vents install in the ranch/rambler.  Drain vents are the 2" vent pvc that are sticking out of ur roof.  It's ok.  gurgling is normal.

  6. Your drains are not vented. I have the same problem. It is common in older homes.

  7. It sounds like you may have a blocked vent. Could be a bird or other animal has built a nest or otherwise clogged it up. You can check the vent pipe on the roof for blockage by dropping a small weight on a long string or nylon cord down the pipe. You may need to call a plumber.
