I dream all night. It's exhausting. Anything I can do to get some dreamless sleep?

From the moment I fall asleep I start to dream. Lucid, intense, very emotional sometimes. I don't think I'm going through all 5 stages of the sleep cycle. It's just the REM stage ALL NIGHT LONG. I wake up exhausted physically and mentally. Sometimes my dreams are so intense they set my mood and emotional state for the entire day. Any suggestions?

  1. I could give you a whole book on how to get better sleep.

But the important thing to do is find a way to stop obsessing on the dreams.  It's one of those spiraling things.  You had a bad night where you were in a light sleep and remember all of your dreams.  Then you worried about it.  Then because you worried about it you slept lightly again.  And so on and so on...

It is necessary to dream or you will become psychotic which is bad.

You have to analyze your room where you sleep, the food you eat and the relationships you have.

Room: Dark, quiet and the right temperature.  Don't forget the stuff on the bed make it as comfy as possible.

Food: Don't eat after eight at night and don't eat anything you know disagrees with you no matter how much you like it.  No 5 alarm chili at 9:30.

Relationships:  Don't fight with anyone, especially friends or lovers just before bed.  Don't break up with anyone after noon.  Don't have a rousing wrestling match with your brother just before bed and don't exercise within an hour of bed time.

But do exercise early evening and make it count.  You want to go to bed physically exhausted once in a while.

If you are a naturally light sleeper go to your doctor and see what he can do.  At some point you may need medication but make that the last thing you do rather than the first.

  2. Before you go to bed, make a list of things to do, and things that are bothering you. Maybe so much is going through your mind that you feel you have to sort it out at night. When you go to bed, pray - it helps. Sit down with your morning coffee and look at the list and what you can reasonable accomplish today. Maybe in the morning, some things won't look so important, and you can schedule them later, or not at all. Good luck.

  3. Some times its what and when you eat at night..but also you may have an issue that you are not dealing with and you are harbouring on it in your sleep also...look at yourself and your habits and see what needs to be cahnged and do it...if it hurts someone to make the right decisions for yourself than so be it....
