on a 5 pound note, my friend has told me that it is illegal to deface money, because in never actually belongs to you and is only a representation of the money you own which is kept by the bank of england.

is this true or are they talking sh*te.

Bank of England promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of.... then the value of the note.

So not it's not your money, just something you carry around as a representation.

Its technically true but I doubt you'll be prosecuted for it! Pass it to some poor unsuspecting 16 year old working in MacDonalds, or a cab driver after dark if you're really worried.

Sort of. It used to be a criminal offence until quite recently - indeed, it was a capital offence for a long time! But now you can no longer be prosecuted for it, unless you are doing it for fraudulent reasons.

It's true- but it's unlikely they will know who did it or prosecute! It is the serial number on a bank not that makes it valid- tear that off and it's all but useless.
