Question:

I dropped my phone down the loo! What can I do?

I keep my phone in my back pocket, and always remember to take it out before going to the loo. Obviously, as fate has it, the one time I forget to take it out, it drops down the loo!

Now, I absolutely love my phone so I panicked, dunked my hand down the loo instantly and took it out. I then wiped it off with a towel (which then went in the wash), turned it off and put it straight in the airing cupboard. It then starting crackling at me and vibrating, so i took out the battery, sim card, etc.

I then looked on YouTube and saw a video of a guy telling you what to do when dropping your phone in water: take it apart, dry it as much as possible with a kitchen towel then pop it in an airtight container with rice, which will soak up all moisture. It says to leave it for one to two days. I followed the advice and did what it told me to do.

My phone isn't that old at all, and I do not want a new one, and can't afford a new one either at the moment. Is there anything else I can do to save my phone? Its the Sony Ericsson W580i.

Thank youu! :(

  1. save the sim card. most important.

  2. I agree that getting the SIM card out first is an important step.

Otherwise your friend gave you good advice, however if you can you can try substituting the rice for desicant if you can find it. This is the stuff that goes in those "Do not eat" packets you find in all sorts of products to keep them dry.

I do not recommend freezing the product since expanding ice may cause more problems then you have now.. and the LCD screen may not take lightly to it either.

    Good luck!

  3. I've done that before.  I've also dropped my car remote in the toilet.  Once it's dry, it should be okay.

  4. The rice idea is true and I have saved several phones and even a couple of digital cameras that way and recommend it to my clients. The only other thing I have had to do (in only 2 cases) was to clean the key pads with alcohol later.

  5. With other electronics that I've managed to get wet, putting them into the freezer for a while has done a great job drying out all of the water and making it work like new.

It's saved me 2 different times with an iPod and an old phone.

If that doesn't work I'm not sure what else you can do to save the phone, definitely keep the Sim card because if it's still functional at least you won't lose all of your contacts and such.

    Sorry for the bad misfortune.

  6. I hate to tell you butt you are probably going to have to replace it. try to save to sim card, then being it to your phone store, even though I know you dont want to. if you have insurance on your phone that might help too for the cost.
