I drove an 8 gear truck, does that mean I should be able to drive a 10 gear truck too?

  1. Just as easy. The gearbox you used would have been a "Range Change" ( 4 over 4). Depending on the manufacturer, the layout could be different. Scania & Volvo do a 9 speed - 4 over 4 with "crawler" gear,and a 14 speed - 3 over 3 with a "split gear" + 2 "crawler",  ZF a 16 speed - 4 over 4 with split. The hardest part is getting used to the extra gears, you do not need to use all of them. With the newer trucks, a lot of manufacturers are going down the automatic route, some with 2 pedal and some with 3 pedals. I have driven both types, and prefer the conventional 3 pedal layout for slow speed maneuvres as there is normal clutch control, against trying to control with just the throttle. Either way, we are classed as  "Professional Drivers" and as such, employers will expect you to be able to drive anything they give you!! - Even Mercedes with the "EPS" gear box.!!

  2. There is no difference whatsoever, besides the fact it's two extra gears.

    Large Goods Vehicles and Passenger carrying often have between 8, and 16 gears.

    Truck Drivers have to take 5 Tests, ridiculous I know, but that's the goverment for you. Money money money...

    1. Category B Theory

    2. Category B Practical

    3. LGV/PCV Theory

    4. Category C Practical (or D)

    5. Category C + E Practical

    B = Car

    D = Coach / Bus

    C = Lorry

    E = General category for any size of trailer (including articulated)

  3. well its obvioulsy a larger truck, make sure you have the CDL required to operate the truck if it is necessary, and therefore if you know how to drive a truck that size the number of gears should not matter
