I dug a hole to put all dead leaves from my narra tree. The leaves has turned black. Is this soil or fertilize

Do I use this soil as a fertilizer, or can it be used for my potted plants?

  1. decaying organic matter is compost, it's similar to fertilizer in that it provides nutrients, but it's really great fro improving soil quality, you can use probably 50/50 in potted plants.


  2. This black material is ''humus'' - one component of compost.  Very good as a fertilizer when mixed with a small amount of hardwood ash (if the fire was not started with gas or starter fluid) and composted manure.  I sometimes add a very small amount of blood meal and bone meal to add nitrogen, calcium and other nutrients.

    Alone, it is a great soil conditioner and contributes some nutrients as well.

  3. Mix it with dirt and then you can use it for potted plants but not much dirt will be needed.
