I dyed it black last night and it came out looking blue in the light. I want to get a softer more natural black look. Can I re- dye it tonight with a soft black? i previously had blonde streaks in my hair before dying black last night.

  1. I dye my hair black all the time :)

sounds like you used either a blackest black , midnight black , or blue black color (depends on what brand of hair dye you used)

You see when you get black hair dye it's mixed with either a blue or purple dye and brown to make it black, so naturally your hair usually will get a tint of either purple or blue. To prevent this in the future try not to leave the dye longer than the listed time and since your hair was blond before it took the color more strongly and made it tint more.

But the soft black should help you out even though it might not be as dark as you would like it.  I don't think there should be too much of a problem if you dye it again today. BUT this depends on how fragile you hair is. If you straighten it a lot or your hair is thin I recommend skipping 1 week to 2 weeks at minimum before coloring your hair again. But if your hair is healthy and thick you can dye it again in a matter of the next day because that's what I do and my hair is perfectly fine.

    edit:

The person is not trying to make it brown or any other lighter color!!!

It's a soft black which is still black but without the major tinting of blue or purple!

Yes you can let the hair fade on it's own and the tinting will eventually become a lot less noticeable. Usually it only looks tinted for the first week of when you colored your hair.

AND what the heck do you mean dye is for fabric or whatever

people color their hair all the time and let me tell you it's about as damaging as straightening and blow drying your hair so it's not a big deal

sorry if this has offended anyone

but seriously if you've never colored your hair before then don't even take the time to answer questions like this

    *calms down*

    ok I'm good now :)

  2. I'm afraid that black is too strong to put a lighter color over it. If you do really want a lighter toned black, try giving it time to wash out some, and then try again. That's about the only way you'd be able to manage it. Unless of course you bleach the h*ll out of it, or use color remover, but if you want to do those, I recommend seeing a professional hair dresser. They'll actually know how to do it best.

  3. I dont recommend you dying your hair so quickly right after you just dyed it.

You should wait for at least a week or so (and thats the MINIMUM) before you redye it because the harsh chemicals in the dye solution itself is extremely harmful to your hair.

It's best if you wait for like 3 months, plus blue-black is a nice color :)

  4. Yes. Since it is a dye, not a bleach (which is A LOT more damaging), recoloring is safe to do immediately.

  5. Actually..If it looks Blue in the light. You should keep it..that's a super pretty color, and I have that in my hair(You got a Blue-Black color, instead of a Black color, by the way.)..But if not...It's fine to color your hair..No time limit, It'll be just as damaging in hair, then if you did it 4 months from now.

  6. You are compounding the whole situation by doing more and more and not really understanding what you are doing!

First, "dye" is for fabrics, and should not be used on hair.  Dye can only go darker, never lighter.

Secondly, you had streaks (bleached hair) which absorbs colour better than normal hair, and will appear much darker.  Black is a blue-based colour.  There are very few with true natural black hair.  Most "black" hair is really a dark brown, which is probably what you mean by softer black.

Since you have already used the black, it's going to be very difficult to make lighter by using another colour on top of it!  Black sometimes will be impossible to remove, depending on what you used.  Some brands are very bad for this.  You will need to use a colour remover -- NOT a bleach!  The remover will dissolve artificial colour molecules, and leave you with your bleached hair (even black bleaches your hair first).  Then you can use another hair colour to add the pigments you want, this time in a shade a little lighter than you want.  It always seems to be darker when on your hair.

It doesn't matter when you do this, since the damage is already there, and will always be there months from now.  Because this is a rather complicated procedure, it may be best that you have this repaired by a professional hair colourist this time.  You just don't want to waste a lot of time and money trying different things, and risking more damage to your hair.  It's not worth it.
