I was at work yesterday, and we were cleaning up after a barbecue thingie. It's on the beach, so there were all kinds of seagulls everywhere. We had a bunch of leftover rolls from dinner, so we started breaking them into pieces and throwing them to the birds. At one point, a girl threw an entire roll, and a seagull swallowed the entire thing without thinking or chewing at all. She started joking about how she should have put a rock in it and that it still would have swallowed it, and how hilarious the concept was.

Then, I found a small pine cone, about an inch and a half wide. Thinking that they wouldn't really eat the whole thing, I stuffed it inside a roll and threw it to the gulls. Then, one of them ate the whole thing.

Is he going to die? I feel really bad about it. :(

  1. If pigeons are flying rats,  seagulls are flying raccoons.  Think of all the fish and worms that will survive because you accidentally killed that garbage eater.

  2. yes it will probably die.....:( poor gull :( :( :( :(

i don't think seagulls "chew" they don't have teeth, they usually swallow things whole (like pelicans). I've seen a seagull swallow a whole hotdog!

  3. LOL. dats funny.

  4. that's the life of a scavenger, risky business. Sometimes it's a hotdog, sometimes it's a pinecone.

    Should be fine.

  5. They would vomit it up if it did not agree.

  6. You're horrible!! Why would you do that?? You need to re-evaluate your ways of thinking. At least you have a conscience..

Most people would just laugh. Seagulls are scavengers so they eat all types of things but I'm not so sure it will be 100% okay. Hopefully it will regurgitate it or his body can pass it.

Not that it matters but you can inquire with a local bird specialist or post this in medicine.

  7. I doubt that it would die. After all, my brother ate an alligator claw when he was really young (don't ask), and he's still alive. It will probably pass.

  8. << I feel really bad about it.>>

Reardless of whether this one lives or dies, and you'll never know for sure, trust your bad feelings and don't do it again.  From that position, both you and future seagulls you might meet will have gained.  Tell yourself off.  However, you can't change what's already happened.  Besides, all humans are capable of greatness, and that includes great stupidity.
