I kept my female betta in a 5-Gal tank by herself. She had a heater and filter. last month she started to get a little fungus type growth. I cleaned the tank treated the water and it cleared up. Once it cleaned up I stopped treatment. So it came back in a few weeks.

I think I put too much of the fungus treatment in. I noticed she was acting weird today but I did not think anything of it. Now she is dead. I feel awful this was something I could have prevented. She was fine until I added more of the fungus treatment. She was eating and swimming all happy. But I wanted to get rid of the fungus. I should have done more water changes.

I have been keeping betta for many year I NEVER had one get this type of fungus.

How do I clean this tank out to get it ready for another? Could I just use Salt or should I use a little bit of bleach? Or would just letting it sun dry kill anything?

I feel so bad I messed up big time I know exactly what I did wrong too. Have you ever done something like that?

  1. Yeah one time I did. I messed up big time and know exactly what I did wrong.  I locked a dog in a tiny doghouse and left it there for days until the whole thing was full of dogcrap and it had died.

  2. i had a goldfish that died once... wouldn't say it was my fault tho i got it from the fair

  3. don't worry about it. My brother had the same problem. Almost 2/3 bettas get a disease called fin rot which is common. It wasn't your fault. Just nature.

  4. fill it up with hot water and let it sit and then empty out the water and scrub it

  5. im sorry to hear that-

well you could just use hot hot hot water. or i guess bleach if you are really worried. but make sure you rinse out the tank until you dont smell it anymore. but i think you can just rinse it because those parasites live ON the fish. once the fish is gone, the parasite is too.

** also, salt is a natural remedy for fish. i would get some aquarium salt and dissolve about a teaspoon and add it to the five gallon. i keep a little salt in my tanks all the time.

    i hope this helps!
