Question:

I feel bad getting a dog just because it's "cute"?

To me, it has that weird vibe similar to human eugenics. Only with dogs lol.

When I want a new dog, I go to the Humane Society and pick one of the ugliest dogs there, because those are the ones that often never find a home :(

I would feel terrible if I picked my new best friend just because she was cuter than the other ones. She would never even know it!

I swear, I'm not a fruit :)

  1. Only completely irresponsible people would get a dog based on its looks. A cute dog might be impossible for you to take care of, and would eventually end up in a shelter. Unfortunately, these are most of pet store puppies' buyers. Responsible owners do research on breeds first, and choose a dog based on compatibility. So it isn't only about guilt, it's more so about lack of research.

And in all honesty, I haven't the slightest idea how anyone can call any dog, or any animal, ugly!?! Seriously, I'm lost O.O

Dogs do not have beauty. They are dogs, they can't be beautiful. Who says one trait is better than another? In my mind, I'm picturing one dog with a petite face that's "cute" and another with masculine features that is "homely"...LOL! I mean it isn't like all little dogs are cute, and big dogs ugly. Or black and white dogs, or something. They are all different dogs. Not one is better than others.

Anyway, the point is that once you bring your dog home, settle it down, and start getting to know it, it will be just a dog. ALL dogs are loving, devoted and definitely unaware of what you really think of them. I think that regardless of whether you take home a cute or ugly dog, after its unconventional love, you will probably forget all about what it looks like. It will just be your dog. Just like a mother loving her child no matter what he looks like.

And personally, I don't think I've ever thought about a dog's appearance when adopting. My three were adopted, and when I was deciding to give them a home, I was only thinking about how we would work together and if there would be any problems. There weren't, so I kept them, and I couldn't care less about what they look like. One of them even has one eye ;)

  2. It's okay!

Just think, your saving a dog =)

Someone will eventually get the "Ugly" dog.

They are just as sweet and are just as loveable as others!

  3. You know I work with a humane society and beauty is in the eye of the beholder - I have seen some not so attractive animals connect with certain people and it was just meant to be.

What I've noticed is the animals that are not exceptional in any way are the ones that get left behind - the ordinary looking gray dog that is shy gets overlooked rather than the dog with three legs or the one with the funky looking coat.

There has to be an emotional connection and sometimes appearance has something to do with it and sometimes not.

  4. Aww this is really sweet. Ugly dogs have their own charm and are cute in their own special ways. I like the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest... some of the dogs are so charming!
