I'm getting this weird thing happen to me tonight when I try to sleep. It's like when I'm lying there my body begins to tingle all over and I feel like my muscles are completely useless and for a second it's like everything is fading, and that I'm being paralyzed. I feel like I'm slipping underwater or something. I know it's not a normal sleep feeling because I get jolted out of it feeling all panicky. This happened a few times and now I'm all shaky and nervous and afraid to go to sleep. Has this ever happened to anyone before? What's happening to me?

  1. As your body prepares for sleep, it paralyzes its muscles so that you don't hurt yourself by copying the movements you make in your dreams. Sometimes, you're not entirely asleep when this happens, and sometimes you're still paralyzed when you wake up. Hypnagogia is the correct term for it. Sometimes, this is accompanied by visual and/or auditory hallucinations, and they think that this is an explanation for at least some reports of alien abductions. Personally, I just hear things as I'm falling asleep. Yes, it's kind of scary, but just try to keep in mind that it's simply your body preparing for sleep, and that nothing you see, hear or feel is real. It's just the beginning (or end) of a dream.

  2. are you on any medication?

Tylenol PM's have made me feel similar.

  3. I learnt about this kind of thing in psychology. I believe it's called sleep paralysis and its where many peoples' accounts of being abducted by aliens or visited by demons come from because they are in a state of sleep but while awake. Look it up because I can't explain it properly and I don't know how to fix it.

  4. Actually, your comments suggest three possibilities either alone or in conjunction with each other: sleep apnea, night terrors, and/or restless leg syndrome.

Whatever the cause may be, you really need to consult your doctor as soon as possible. Schedule an appointment at once.

  5. You are experiencing a condition called semi-sleep. When we start to go to sleep, our whole body relaxes and feels almost like we can't move. This causes your panic. Your not going to die,but you may go Astral traveling which happens much in the same way.Relax, have a good sleep.

  6. just try to sleep into it. be calm and ready about it. your body just needs rest... pretty badly. you'll be fine when you wake up.
