  1. 1 it depends on your dad. some take years to get over a passed loved one and with some it is easy for them to deal with the passing to get a new puppy to help them. Thats something you should think about, or talk to your dad and see where he is at with it.#2 hookworms are found in dirt. what you need to do is when you get a puppy get him his vaccines and get him on a hookwork prevention ask your vet they have pills once a month you give to prevent infections by hookworms.#3 he can, just make sure you have the new dog protected against the hookworm #4 I would clean out the dog house just to be safe but i wouldnt put hin in there util the new dog is prevented against hookworm and has all his vaccines#5 dogs beg because they are dogs and the smell food and they want to eat it.

  2. I am sorry to hear about the passing of your family pet. I do not know the correct answers to your questions about the safety of other animals contracting the worms but I can give you some advice on the question about your father.

Everyone is different and its really hard to tell you what to do without knowing what type of person you or your father is. Even though your father is in a great amount of pain right now he still needs time to grieve. If a replacement is brought in before he can grieve and move on, it will not be the best environment for the dog or your dad.

You should casually bring it up with your dad to get a feel for where he is at. If he seems to be ready for a new baby......there are plenty of them out there waiting to be taken to their forever home.

Please be sure to check with your local animal care and control or humane society. A rescued dog makes the best pet!!!

  3. I'm sorry for your loss. As for the hookworm answers I don't have any.

  4. It is easy to get rid of Hookworms.  Just give any effective oral wormer.   My favorite is any brand with pyrantel pamoate as the active ingredient.  This is generally well tolerated by the pet, safe and effective. If the animal is severely anemic, blood transfusions and supportive care may be required.  It is best to worm breeding female dogs and cats before breeding and again 3, 6 and 9 weeks after whelping.  Juveniles migrating through the body will not be killed by conventional wormers.  This is why we like to worm puppies and kittens twice three weeks apart and then check a fecal specimen three weeks later. This allows all migrating juveniles to reach the intestine where they are easily killed. Since Hookworm eggs and larva build up in damp soil, often times the dogs tied out on dirt or in soil runs need to be moved to a non-infested area to prevent reinfection.  If this is impossible and the pet keeps becoming reinfected, I suggest keeping the dog on Filaribits Plus (a daily heartworm preventative with a low level wormer included which kills Hookworms, Roundworms and Whipworms) for a year or more while the Hookworm larva and eggs die off.  Concrete surfaced runs or runs with deep pebble coverings allow the surface to dry allowing sunlight to kill the larvae. Fecal Examinations: Young dogs and cats should have a fecal floatation done twice a year to detect Hookworm eggs. Dogs don't beg for help verbally, but do show signs when there sick, they can even have fevers, like humans.
