Every time I go to my orthodontist, I feel sick on the way there and when I get there. I feel sick as in I feel like I am going to throw up! I know it's nerves but does anyone know any way how I can stop feeling sick and feel good before and while I'm at my Orthodontists? Please, no hate answers, only nice answers about experience, recommendations or advice! Thank you! :)

  1. I can't stand my orthodontist or any of her team, with the exception of one member. I bit one of them during my last visit and it really helped, and it might help you too!

    Really though it's all in your mindset. You're thinking about painful or uncomfortable the experience will be...you mind is putting out that energy, and the universe in turn is giving you something to really be uncomfortable about. Try thinking and believing that your next visit will short, painless and an overall positive experience and gradually your trips will soon be no biggie.

  2. Try to do things to release your stress:

    * Walk

    * Jump up and down and shake out your wiggles (maybe you did this in elementary school).

    * Talk to yourself in the mirror, say out loud why you're nervous, sometimes getting it out helps. This always makes me laugh since it's sorta silly.

    * Tell the orthodontist, I'm really nervous, to get it out in the open.

    * Meditate - close your eyes, think peaceful thoughts, like of gentle ocean waves rolling onto the shore.

    * Visualize - close your eyes and in your mind see yourself go through a successful appointment. Professional athletes do this before competing.

    * Read or Watch something that amuses you.

    * Listen to music that calms you.

    * Breath, seriously, make sure you're not holding your breath.

    * Drink a little water.

    * Don't be late, leave in plenty of time, so you won't get more nervous.

    * Go to the bathroom before leaving and at the office.

    Why are you so stressed out, is there a reason? If it was pain that only happened once, try to tell yourself that it was a one time thing. Ask your mom if you can take kids tylenol 20 minutes BEFORE your appointment so it will kick in by the appt. Drink plenty of water with it.

    Good luck.

  3. It must because there is something they do that bothers you. I use to just remember and say to myself that I will look better when it is all over.

  4. I too get that sick feeling, i start to shake and even have suffered from a racing heart.

    What i do when i am in the chair is voice my feelings to my dentist then i make myself take some calming breaths, i don't allow myself to grab and hold tight to the arm of the chair. I have in the past had something in my hands that occupy my mind by fidgeting with it or even had my ipod on at a level that i could still hear the dentist if he asked me a question.

    Unfortunately i don't think i will ever get completely comfortable with it but these little things do help me.

  5. Take some Pepto Bismal before you leave :)

  6. I get this every time i go to! It might sound stupid but i dont do anything physically, i do it mentally. You see i'm a big fan of derren brown, so i use his techniques, were you make the image of going to the dentist in your head small, not colourfull, with no sound, as well as telling your self your not nervous etc... its hard to explain but just let me know if you want to hear more x*x

  7. Whenever I feel sick in the car, I eat saltine crackers. They fill up your stomach so you don't feel like you're going to throw up. Just make sure you brush your teeth afterwards!

  8. you just hate your orthodontist, they give you the sick feeling. You need to spend more time with your orthodontist & talk freely with him & make friends with him, then you can get ride of your fears. I used to feel the same when I used to see our Physiology Professor. I made it a point to go to his office & see him more often & speak to him. Later in my viva voca, I could look him into his eye & answer, to show I am confident.
