Question:

I feel so stupid for doing this?

I finished a diploma of information technology last year and had to do 120 hours of work experience, which I did with our local councils IT department where I didn't do too well at all, I didn't work well, I was late, and I even ended up crying at the end in front of the man in charge there because I was so behind in my work. They couldn’t wait to get rid of me before that, the guy was like ‘that two weeks holiday you get in the semester counts as part of your 12 weeks here’ and another worker said ‘I have to take a vacation because of you’.

Anyway I managed to pass that diploma somehow and thought the IT field wasn't for me, and this year wanted to do something in fitness, a fitness diploma at my same college. I have to 40 hours of work experience for this course and I decided to do it at the fitness centre for the council because I’m a member there, its close and better than a corporate environment with some personal interest in working there later on.

This is where I was so stupid to make a dumb mistake. I spoke to the coordinator the fitness centre and he told me that I would have to talk to the woman in charge of work experience in personnel. I thought I would save myself having to do the OH&S induction for the council which would only have taken one hour. She would have forgotten me completely by now and wouldn't have spoken to the IT department about my performance anyway.

Then being the idiot I am, I told her that I already had completed an OH&S certificate for council and she said that it was only to be valid for one year, and so I said I needed to check the date on it. She then asked what that was for. I told her that it was that I was ‘going’ to do work experience for the council in the IT department but I wanted a change of career, so then she was like 'so you've already done work experience for the council?', I could have even said no at this point and better d**n yet, said nothing about that stupid certificate, but I said yes. Then she straight away asked me for my last name because I only introduced myself with my first name.

I knew I was screwed, what an idiot I was, I should have known that she would check with the IT department with how I went there. Now I'm going to get an god awful reference and not get my work experience at the council’s fitness centre, which I am already a member there, I live close to it, and I have some interest in working there when I finish, and now it is all gone.

Anyway, I sent her an email with the details she wanted, my contact details, course details, and available times and days for her to supposedly send to fitness coordinator for approval, which he would have accepted because he sounded fine with taking me on through the phone call we had.

The irony is that I found that stupid certificate by chance lying around when I was working in the IT department and took it home and kept it. Not only did I not save that precious hour it would have taken to do the induction again, but I totally screwed myself from ever working there and I have to find some other god awful private fitness facility to work in.

I'd thought about this briefly before and wasn’t sure, but what an incredibly stupid decision to make. Can't stand how stupid I am. All I had to do was not mention that expired certificate and I would have been fine. Can’t stand how stupid I am.

  1. Well, what can any of us say to you other than it is good to know that there are honest people in the world.  Sometimes though it may not turn out as you think it will.  I had a job where I was bullied for four years and was working under incredible stress near the end.  It ended up that not only did I get a redundancy payout I also got two very good referrees from that workplace even though everyone said that they hated me and ran around spreading rumours behind my back.  Im going to cross my fingers for you though and hope that everything turnsout ok.

  2. Calm down. We all make mistakes. Would you honestly have felt better if you would have lies to her? I know I wouldn't have because I have a huge guilty conscience when I do something wrong. Maybe there is a way you could work this out. Try to explain the situation to her. Some people are understanding.

    Best of Luck!

  3. You poor thing, I just wanna give you a cuddle.

  4. We all make mistakes, it's called being human.

As yet you have not heard back from the personnel dept. so you may be worrying for nothing. In the meanwhile think of some good excuse as to why your performance was poor at the IT dept.

If the worse comes to the worse you can get your work experience somewhere else and then look at seeking employment there further down the line.

If it turns out you fail in your attempt to get work at the place you want there are still plenty of other places you could work.

As the saying goes ' As one door closes, another one opens'.

Good luck for you future, and try not to beat yourself up about it so much.

  5. Hi There!

I can tell by the way you spell your words that you are not from the states, where I live.  That gives me misfortune of not knowing how available other places of employment are available to you and why you believe you are 'completely screwed'.

I do know however that you do have to stop kicking yourself in the butt and calling yourself an idiot.  If you finished any type of a higher education you are obviously not that.

My suggestion to you, and it is only a suggestion of course, is to go back to the woman you did the interview with and talk to her again.  Tell her you were nervous, that you answered her question on impulse, and then explain your situation.  If you were under some sort of duress during your internship maybe you can explain that.  If in fact you were just being an irresponsible worker, were you maybe a little overwhelmed and tried to do this all too quickly after getting your degree or whatever, maybe you can make this woman understand.

If the whole situation is impossible, guess what, maybe all private fitness facilities are not that 'god-awful'.

Please think about it and PLEASE stop calling yourself an idiot.

On a side note - if you are familiar at all with the movie icon 'Tom Cruise', maybe you have seen the movie he was in (showing my age here because it's one of his first) 'Risky Business'.  If you have seen it, think back on a phrase that came up in it: "Sometimes you just have to say 'what the #$%^'".  If you have not seen it, try to rent it and watch it.  It sounds like you need a good laugh, after all it is 'the best medicine', and it might turn your perspective a notch and inspire you to come up with a good solution to this problem you have found yourself in.

Some people think I am nuts, but I have found a lot of inspiration from movies and the contents in them.

I really hope this helps and please know I am rooting for you.

  6. The stupid things that I do in life make the smart things look even better!

Life will go on and in 20 years you will never remember it. Just kidding, you will forget it and get over it. Don't worry, that is something you will never do again.

Learn from your mistakes and go forward.

Good luck and learn from your mistakes.

  7. Don't you hate when you do something you know was just really idiotic and then can't keep from replaying it over and over in your head?  Anyway, has she actually said you can't do your work experience there??

I know it's easier said then done but maybe you should wait until she gets back to you - then you could have an explanation ready for why your work was not up to scratch.  You could tell her you were really not enjoying your placement and were dealing with some personal issues which you now have under control and if she would just give you a second chance you could prove to her that your a great worker.

Hope it helps - and again, please don't beat yourself up.  It won't really help.  People do stupid things all the time! - Well I do anyway :-)
