I feel so trapped -- what should I do?

I feel so so trapped in my job, but I HAVE to work so I am not on the streets. I get paid by the hour, and don't make much money at all.

My boss is a complete a**hole and a womanizer, and I can't stand him. I am trying to find another job, but it's hard because I can't take time off to look -- I have been sending out my resume so I am being proactive.

I feel so desperate. I feel like I am going to have a breakdown if I have to keep working at this job. What should I do?

  1. First of all, don't over stress yourself on the job. Like you said, at the moment you need it. Many people don't get along with their bosses. The best you can do is report him to his supervisor if he's being unfair or purposely picking you.

As far as the job thing goes, without investing much time, you can type up a resume and submit it to free places like careerbuilder.com or monster.com . Many of those places will have people contacting you when they see your qualifications so all you have to do is check your email.  Also with careerbuilder.com you can spend all of 5 minutes a night searching for new job postings in your area and with 1 or 2 clicks submit your pretyped resume for them. It shouldn't take long to get a new job!

Find someone to talk too also when your having a stressful day at work. Even ranting a little bit takes a load off your shoulders. If you need to, feel free to email me, I don't mind, I know what you're going through!

  2. Honestly, I really know how you feel.  I spent over 2 years in a job that I hated.  And I mean really hated.  To the point where I felt physically sick when I got within 1mile of the building.  I was over-worked, underpaid and not appreciated in the slightest.  I was a virtual lone female working in a male-dominated business, and I had to do so much more just to prove myself as an equal.  I was even at the point where I was going to give in my job and go and work in a supermarket, I didn't care about the money, I just wanted my sanity back.

I won't lie and say that it's easy, because it's not.  You've just got to keep at it.  Get your resume out there.  Register with as many job agencies as you can.  Tell everyone that you know that you're looking for something new and ask if they know of anything, or if they know someone who knows of anything.  Half the time it really is who you know and not what you know.  Most of all DON'T GIVE UP!  I wanted to leave my last job after 6 WEEKS of being there and I ended up there for 2.5 years!  I got myself into a good state of mind, told myself that I was extremely employable, I have lots of skills, I'm a hard-working person and most of all I believed that my perfect job was right around the corner.  The chances are it won't fall at your feet, you've got to make your own luck to a certain extent.  Now, I have a job that I love, I've been there for 18months, I work with great people who respect my opinion.  It's amazing.  On the one hand I consider myself very lucky, on the other hand I know that I worked so hard for so many years that I truely deserve it.

You can do it.  Your time will come.  And then when you have the job of your dreams you'll know that you've earnt it.

    Good luck my friend!!
