  4. I can definitely smell pepper. I think that the dictionary definition is implying that it spreads its own aroma.

Spices can come from any part of the plant. This is not your argument, but it has been made. Cinnamon is a bark, cloves are a dried flower bud, chilli's are a fruit, ginger is a root, nutmeg is a seed and saffron is the stamen of th flower.

Also you should use multiple reliable sources for definitions. Merriam-Webster defines it as 'any of various aromatic vegetable products (as pepper or nutmeg) used to season or flavor foods.'

MSN Encarta 'Spices, aromatic flavourings made from parts of plants.'

American Heritage Dictionary : 'Any of various pungent, aromatic plant substances, such as cinnamon or nutmeg, used to flavor foods or beverages. '

SO from these definitions I think that pepper qualifies.

  5. I don't believe you when you say the definition is "a condiment with spreads aroma." Maybe if you'd said "which spreads aroma.."

Pepper does have aroma. You must not have a strong sense of smell. In fact, pepper has so much aroma that it often causes people using it to sneeze as the loose powder enters the nasal cavity when they apply it to food.

  6. by aroma, pepper and it's variations are fragrant. try smelling some. and they also can change how a food tastes. so yes it's a spice.

  7. Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning. The same fruit is also used to produce white pepper, red/pink pepper, and green pepper.

Its use is always as spice and it has distinct aroma!

  8. If it's a condiment - I would challenge you to eat a handful............

  9. pepper is a spice, so is salt. pepper does have a very distinct aroma.

  10. Freshly ground pepper has a strong aroma.  If your pepper doesn't, your probably using old, preground pepper.  Don't even bother.  Buy a pepper mill and whole peppercorns.

Pepper has been a major spice since ancient times.

  20. spice-yes

  21. Black pepper is produced from the still-green unripe berries of the pepper plant. The berries are cooked briefly in hot water, both to clean them and to prepare them for drying. The heat ruptures cell walls in the fruit, speeding the work of browning enzymes during drying. The berries are dried in the sun or by machine for several days, during which the fruit around the seed shrinks and darkens into a thin, wrinkled black layer, the result of a fungal reaction. Once dried, the fruits are called black peppercorns.

so you are right Its not a spice its a  fruit ..........
