I was taking driving lessons from my dad. But the traffic was a little heavy that day and I hesitated. after that, my dad told me to "take control of my life" and not be a "spectator" but be a player. I felt very awkward for the rest of the day and I can't get it off my mind. Please Help!

  1. I think the worst thing for any new learner on the road is to take lessons from a parent. Go and have professional lessons.

  2. Learning to drive is a time of anxiety for both kid and parent.  Your Dad may just be encouraging you to be more confident of your own decisions when you drive.

Most kids at your age are trying to figure out how to become their own person.  You've had 16 years of letting parents make your decisions and now you begin to make some of your own.

Your Dad probably wants to make sure nobody walks all over you and that comes when you mature into a person who lives life proactively instead of  re actively.

Sometimes we parents want to hurry that process in our kids just so they don't get hurt.

Believe in yourself and the lessons you have learned so far from your parents and life.  Be patient with yourself and tell yourself you will mature and make better decisions and more confident decisions as you mature.

  3. Well, its an old fashioned way to 'coaching'. Some teachers are creative and kind, some are idiotic and stupidly unkind!

  4. He thinks he is encouraging you, but to you, it sounded like he's pushing you into scary and uncomfortable emotional territory.  Learning happens at the pace the student can go.

You can tell your dad you will be a cautious learner about learning to drive-- there are very real risks involved in driving, or you can have someone else help you to learn.
