Does anyone know when I would be receiving my refund and my stimulus check? My original 1040 said i could be claimed as a dependent, but that is false. That error prevented me from getting a stimulus check. I sent the Amended return in May. I havent heard anything from the IRS. Does anyone know when I could be receiving anything?

  1. Processing time for amended returns is normally 8 to 12 weeks.  The IRS is running way behind on them this year so you should allow about 16 weeks before you call them

Note that the amended return will NOT get you your rebate this year.  The rebate is based upon your original return as filed.  You'll be eligible for the "second chance" consideration when you file your 2008 return next Spring and if you're eligible then you'll receive a refundable credit on your tax return for the rebate at that time.

  2. If the amendment gave you an additional reFUND, you'll probably get that within another month or so.

It doesn't qualify you for a stimulus payment - those are only sent out based on your original filing, not amendments.  If you make enough next year to owe any federal income tax, you will very likely get a tax break on your 2008 taxes due to the stimulus law since you didn't get a check this year.

  3. This is not going to be a quick process.  I would expect it to take a while.  Don't make any plans for the money.

  4. Allow about 8 weeks for processing.  After that time, call and see if processing has been completed.  If the 1040X entitled you to a refund, it may take another couple of weeks beyond the eight before you receive the check.

The stimulus may take a couple of months more.

  5. Normal processing time is 8-12 weeks but it's running longer due to the huge volume of amended and duplicate returns being received. I wouldn't expect anything before September. As for your stimulus payment, amending your return to claim yourself will not entitle you to a check this year as the payment is based on the original return only. However, you may be able to claim a credit on next year's taxes.

  6. It sounds like someone else claimed you on their return and then you filed your own return.  If this is correct, then you can expect the IRS to contact you and the other person to determine which return is correct.

The normal time frame for processing an amended return, Form 1040X, is 8 to 12 weeks, but I have seen some go several months.  If you have waited the 8 weeks or you need the refund for basic living expenses, contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service in your area.  This is a free service the IRS provides to help people.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service near you can be found on the IRS web site at www.irs.gov or you can call the IRS at (800) 829-1040.
