Question:

I forgot how to "simplify" things?

Okay, well, this is like algebraic expression simplifying stuff...

The easy things in Algebra that I've forgotten..

So I need someone to explain to me. @_@

Well um, first off I start with.

Well, how would you simplify x (x + y) ?

Also, how would you simplify -9-5j+3-2j?

And lastly, this is just a random question about absolute value:

Would this be > or < and how?

-|-1| is > < than |-(-1)|

Apparently, they're not the same. One is bigger? x_x?

But absolute value would mean they're both 1..?

Err, can someone help me with that. XD I forgot all this, eek!

  1. x^2 +xy

    -6-7j

-|-1| < |-(-1)|, because -|-1| have a negative sign outside of absolute value so its less than 1

  2. x(x + y) = x^2 + xy

multiply x by x and add xy

    -9 - 5j + 3 - 2j keep your plain numbers together and your j's together

    = -9 + 3 - 5j - 2j

    = -6 - 7j

Sorry can't help with the absolute values. Don't remember a thing about them either.

  3. for x (x + y)

    the steps would be:

    x (x + y)

    x^2+xy

    for -9-5j+3-2j

    the steps would be:

    -9-5j+3-2j

    -9+3-5j-2j

    -6-7j

and i'm not quite sure about the last one

  4. 1. x (x+y)= x^2 + xy

    *x^2 means x squared

    answer: x^2 + xy

    2. -9 -5j + 3 - 2j= -6 -7j

    answer: -6-7j

    3. |-1| means absolute value. [if the number is inside the absolute value, the sign will be ignored]so...

    -1 < 1

answer: -1 is less than 1

    goodluck!

    ^_^

  5. (1) To "simplify", you're going to DISTRIBUTE. That means that you multiply everything inside the parenthesis by x.

    x (x+y)

    (x)x + (x)y

    x^2 + xy

    (2) Combine like terms on this one. That means, add/subtract the numbers, and add/subtract the like variables.

    -9-5j+3-2j

It's simplest if you change the subtraction to addition (subtracting is the same as adding the opposite/negative)

    -9 + (-5j) + 3 + (-2j)

you can change the order to get:

    -9 + 3 + (-5j) + (-2j)

        -6 + (-7j)

    or you could write -6 - 7j , it's the same thing.

    (3) The absolute value of any number is positive. The one on the left has a (-) sign on the OUTSIDE of the absolute value, making the final number NEGATIVE. So it *has* to be smaller than the one on the right, which has everything on the INSIDE of the absolute value.

    -|-1| is -1, and |-(-1)| is 1, so -|-1| is < |-(-1)| (because -1 is < 1)
